Class News: 5/6A

How is it Friday evening already?  Another jam-packed week of learning and fun has come to an end in Class 5/6A.  Let’s take a look at what our pupils have been up to this week.

Firstly, a huge thank you to all parents who came today to join us for our Topic Review.  We took part in a quiz which saw us reflect upon all of our Topic learning since the beginning of September.  With the parents writing the answers, pupils had to use their books to retrieve information on the Stone Age, druids, mummification and William Morris amongst other things.

Our Writing work this week has seen us complete a set of instructions, linked to our Topic work of creating a lead print.  Students have been looking at using parenthesis (brackets, dashes and commas) to join two independent clauses together, as well as structuring equipment lists and putting instructions in a chronological order.

Despite the cold weather this week, our class have been red hot on the hockey pitch in P.E this week.  We have developed our skills by working on our defensive blocks – the jab and the block tackles.  After practising preventing our opponent from dribbling past us, we then turned into attackers and honed our shooting skills.

Living and Learning this week has seen us continue our discussions around Mental Health, and recognising the importance of talking about how we feel. Identifying those we feel close enough to to share our feelings with is absolutely vital to help young people deal with the wide variety of emotions that they experience.

This week’s Talk Time homework poses a moral question:

Is physical health more important than mental health?

Living and Learning: Mental Health

Over the past couple of weeks, we have been focusing on the topic of Mental Health in our Living and Learning sessions.  In class we have had numerous discussions about what we understand by the term ‘Mental Health’, how do we recognise our own feelings and those of others, and what we can do to provide “self-care”.

We have also explored the importance of talking about our feelings. Talking about our feelings, whether they’re big or small feelings, is a great way to have good mental health.  Sometimes it’s starting to talk about things which is the hardest thing to do.  As a group we explored our ‘support circles’, recognising those individuals who we have close connections with that we may be able to talk to in times of need.

Class 5/6A News

Phew! What a week that has been.  Not only have the pupils crammed in a huge amount of learning, we’ve also been cheering England and Wales to World Cup glory!  Let’s catch up on the goings on in Mr. Robson’s class this week.

In Maths, Year 5 have been getting to grips with mixed numbers and improper fractions, and being able to convert one into the other. One of the key skills to success in this is sold times table knowledge, which we have reinforced this week with Times Table Rockstars sessions at every opportunity.  Having that solid times table knowledge helps to unlock a whole host of mathematical understanding.

Ever wondered what it’s like to interview a snowman?  Well we managed to put one in the hot seat this week along with their friend Lily.  Our Reading focus has been on the heart-warming Christmas tale of “Lily and the Snowman”, where a snowman magically comes to life in Lily’s garden, the two build up a strong bond only for Lily to grow up and the pair drift apart (all while the snowman lived in Lily’s fridge).  Our pupils took turns to be the main characters, whilst the rest of the class used their inference skills to ask questions about how they might have felt at certain parts of the story.

Water resistance was the focus of our Science experiments this week.  Tasked with investigating how changing the shape of an object affected the amount of water resistance it was subjected to, the class took part in a competition to see who could create a shape which would reach the bottom of the tank the quickest.  Some very creative designs were on show, but congratulations to Amelie whose effort reached the surface in 0.38 seconds.

The class have been under strict instructions to follow instructions this week, as creating a clear and concise set of instructions is our Writing focus at present.  Eary in the week they got to grips with tying a necktie, drawing a house and creating origami.  We will build on this further in the coming week and identify the key language and layout that makes a good set of instructions.

Reading Records: WAGOLL

Your child may sometimes come home from school and say that they have seen a WAGOLL.  We often use WAGOLL (What A Good One Looks Like) to demonstrate how we want a particular piece of work or behaviour to look like.  Today I want to share an example of a WAGOLL Reading Record.

Our expectation for pupils is a minimum of 10 to 15 minutes reading at home each day with an adult.  When the child has read with their adult, the date, book title and pages read needs to be recorded in the diary section, and the adult needs to sign this.  Furthermore, if homework has been set, this must also be completed.  This allows the pupil to immerse themselves into the text beyond simply reading to a target page.  We are seeing an increasing number of pupils who either forget to bring their reading records or forgot to complete the homework.

It is vital that pupils are reading at home, and completing the homework when set.

Parents, please continue to support your child’s reading at home.  Developing their competence in this area is vital in them being able to access the wider curriculum.

Class 5/6A News

Another week done and dusted in Class 5/6A.  There’s only 20 days left of school until the Christmas holidays!  Let’s catch up on the class goings-on from this week.

In Writing this week we have continued writing our narrative about an apocalyptic world using figurative language.  The students have produced some very imaginative work and have really got to grips with engaging their reader in different ways.

Tuesday saw us become physicists in our Science lesson.  Pupils recreated the famous experiment of Galileo Galilei to see if objects of differing mass fell to the ground at the same speed.  Using a tennis ball, football and basketball, and dropping these from the same height, our students were able to show that despite the differing mass of the objects, the velocity of which they fell was broadly the same.

It has been really pleasing to see the number of pupils who have improved their arithmetic test scores this week in both Year 5 and 6.  Year 5 have begun to look at unit and non-unit fractions, whilst Year 6 have explored long division.  Parents, you can help support your child’s maths development a home by accessing a number of resources through the Scholes website.  Click here for more details.

Mrs. Thorn and the class have produced some excellent pieces of Art this week.  The pupils have been looking at using different mediums, with this week focusing on chalk pastels. They have produced some very colourful pieces as you can see.

In Topic we have looked at how printing on a large scale is used to replicate the works of William Morris.  Our pupils have today had a go at their own printing methods to create monochrome leaf pictures.

Class 5/6A News w/c 7th November

And so we have reached the end of week 2 of this half-term.  Only 5 more school weeks until Christmas! (Is it too early to mention that word?)  Let’s look at what the class have been up to this week.

In Writing we have begun to plan a short narrative piece about an apocalyptic world.  Using a couple of videos as inspiration to help generate ideas and vocabulary, our pupils have been planning how they will set the scene for their narrative, describe their main character and give a brief insight into the plot.

Air resistance has been the focus of our Science work this week, as the pupils explored the effect of this force on different sized parachutes.   Using cupcake cases and string to make the parachutes, pupils recorded how long it took them to fall to the floor and drew the conclusion that larger parachutes took the longest because of the increased air resistance.

Year 5 pupils have been exploring one of William Wordsworth’s most famous poems in Reading this week, “Daffodils“.  Linking to our writing, we have been identifying how the use of similes, metaphors and personification helps to bring a piece of writing to life and make it engaging for the reader.  We have also practised some of our oracy skills by learning the poem by heart and reciting to the rest of the class.  I am really proud of the pupils’ efforts on this!

On Monday, the school will be recognising Anti Bullying Week through Odd Socks Day.

For this we ask all pupils to come to school wearing odd socks, to encourage people to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and what makes us all unique!  When talking about bullying, Scholes Elmet Primary School defines this as follows:

Bullying is where you hurt someone, physically or emotionally (including online), several times on purpose.

What might bullying look like?

If any of these things happen several (lots of) times, it is bullying.

Hurting peoples’ feelings, for example, name calling, teasing, threatening, ignoring, leaving people out or spreading rumours
Hurting peoples’ bodies, for example, hitting, punching or kicking

Throughout the course of the week, we will be discussing what bullying is, and what we can do as individuals and as a school to prevent it.

Great Learning – Louis M.  Has been on task across all subjects this week.  His planning work for his written narrative piece has made for great reading.  I can’t wait to see the final version!

Living and Learning – Ben.  Is always showing consideration to others in class.  Kind, polite and honest, Ben is always making the best possible choices.

P.E – Harry.  Has shown some super hockey skills this week with great stick control.  He throws himself with enthusiasm into every new task.

Welcome back Class 5/6A

Hello and a big welcome back to all of Class 5/6A pupils after what I hope was an enjoyable half-term break.  It’s great to see everyone again.  Let’s catch up on what we have been doing this week.

Our Topic focus for this half-term is Art, in particular the works of William Morris and Orla Kiely.  We are building up towards creating our own printed floral picture.  To provide us with inspiration, we have been comparing examples of Morris’ work, looking at their colours and patterns; and ended the week with some direct observational drawing of leaves.  These leaves will form the basis for our printing work later in the term.

In Writing, we have begun to look at figurative writing; using similes, metaphors, expanded noun phrases and alliteration to help engage the reader. The pupils were like a walking dictionary with all of the different figurative vocabulary they used, and I was as pleased as punch to be able to read their work.

We have had a couple of visitors into class this week as part of our Community themed week.  On Wednesday we were joined by a member of West Yorkshire Police Force to speak to us about hate crimes, and what we can do to be more aware of and respect the various members of our community.  Thursday saw two guests from Selective Silhouettes join us to talk about the LGBTQ+ community.

Year 5 pupils will have brought home a new reading book this week: Kensuke’s Kingdom.  This half-term we will be reading the same text in class, and homework will be set based on this.  It is very important that pupils are keeping up to date with their reading targets, homework, and bringing their reading records to Book Club on a Friday.

Class News 5/6A

Well, that is the first half-term of the new school year over with!  It doesn’t feel like two minutes since children were arriving on the first day of term, bursting of stories about their holidays.  Let’s take a look at what we have been up to this week.

Our writing focus has been on creating our own recount of visiting an Ancient Egyptian tomb, and retelling all of the adventures along the way.  We have used a variety of resources to help us plan our writing, to ensure we could get the reader hooked on our Egyptian adventure.

Tuesday saw us host a Drop-Down Morning, where we recapped our Geography learnings from the previous year.  Hemispheres, Biomes, Grid references and fact files on Venice were just some of the topics we looked at.  Year 5 particularly enjoyed using Ordinance Survey maps to try and locate our school.

Ancient Egypt was our Topic focus again this week, and this time it was looking at pyramids.  Our pupils could not believe just how big they were.  Each stone weighed 2.5 tonnes (that’s the equivalent of 765 chickens!)  We measured objects out in the playground to compare how these measured up against the size of the tallest pyramid (146m high).

A huge well done to the 17 pupils who put themselves forward to be the class representative on the Junior Leadership Team.  I was blown away by the quality and maturity of the speeches you gave.  After a very tight vote, I can confirm that Samuel Beevers has been elected as our Class Representative.  Well done Sam!

Living and Learning – Freddie.  Gave an excellent candidate speech to be class representative.  Honest, humorous and genuine, his speech was representative of who he is as a person!

Sports – Bethenny.  Always comes up with ways to make games imaginative and fun. A great partner to be teamed up with, she always puts others first before herself.

Learning – Archie.  A superb attitude all week across all subjects.  Your commitment to producing a detailed recount in Writing has been great to see!

The very best of luck to Hope who is sadly leaving us to join a new school. She will be a big miss to the class, and we wish her all of the best.

Class 5/6 A News

This time next week we will all be settling into a week of holiday.  Cannot believe that our first half-term is nearly over.  Let’s quickly recap the goings-on in 5/6A this week.

Firstly, I would like to say a huge thank you to all parents, grandparents and family members for coming to watch our Class Assembly yesterday.  We really appreciate the support. I am absolutely bursting with pride for the pupils’ efforts.  They all smashed it!

In Writing we have begun building up to writing a piece of work around being in an Ancient Egyptian tomb, and all of the secrets and surprises that we discover within it.    Maths has seen our Year 5s continuing their work on column addition and subtraction, as well as using our rounding skills to perform quick calculations.  Year 6 have been working extremely hard in test week with lots of SATS paper practice.

A big thank you to everyone who brought in donations for the Harvest Festival earlier in the week!

In the last week of term students will have the opportunity to put themselves forward to be the class representative for the Junior Leadership Team.  If you would like to do this, get your thinking caps on and write a speech which shows you would be the ideal candidate to represent Class 5/6A.

Certificate winners will be announced on Monday.

5/6A Class Assembly

Just a quick reminder that Class 5/6A will be hosting our Class Assembly this coming Friday afternoon, and we can’t wait to welcome parents, grandparents and family members into school.  The pupils have been working really hard in putting the assembly together to showcase all of their learning over the past 6 weeks.
