- alternative ways for writing the ‘igh’ sound
- alternative ways for writing the ‘o’ and ‘u’ sound
- adding the prefixes un, dis
- adding the suffixes il, ir
- homophones (words that sound the same but are spelled differently)
- ‘double up for a short vowel sound’
