This week’s Spelling Homework is to use rainbow writing to write the spellings from last week. Homework is due on 05 October.

Spelling Challenge: Your child’s spelling tasks this week are to:

  • find words with apostrophes for contraction
  • write the words before they are contracted and write the new word with the apostrophe to mark the omitted letter(s)

Here are some to get you started:

  • would not – wouldn’t
  • I have – I’ve
  • your are – you’re

Your spelling rule to learn this week is adding a suffix (ed, ing) to a short vowel sound.

  • A short vowel is in stop.
  • A long vowel sound is in stoat.

hop – hopping – hopped
trot – trotted – trotting

Create some ‘word families’ like those above – make a list in your homework book of all the words you can create.

Your spelling rule to learn this week is adding suffixes to words ending in ‘-fer’.

  • transfer
  • prefer
  • refer

Create some ‘word families’ – Make a list in your homework book of all the words you can create from the words above by adding suffixes.

Remember sometimes the ‘r’ gets doubled up!

  • The ‘r’ is doubled if the ‘-fer’ is still stressed when an ending is added – transferring.
  • The ‘r’ is not doubled if the ‘-fer’ is no longer stressed – referal.

  • write a ‘rule’ to explain when to use ck and when to use just k

This week’s spellings link to our work on double consonants. ck was a common ‘tricky’ point for lots of children. We’ve also added some simple suffixes to words ending in ck. They will be tested on Thursday 14 September. We’ll test two extra words, to see if your child can apply their learning.

Your spellings to learn this week are words ending ‘-able’/‘-ably’ and ‘-ible’/‘-ibly’. Your child will be tested on Friday 14 September:

  • horrible
  • possible
  • edible
  • reversible
  • invincible
  • legible

  • adorable
  • disposable
  • enjoyable
  • valuable
  • breakable
  • identifiable

We’ll also test your child on two extra words, not on this list, to see if your child can apply the same suffix pattern. Encourage your child to look out for other words belonging to the list.
