- write the words before they are contracted and write the new word with the apostrophe to mark the omitted letter(s)

Your spelling rule to learn this week is adding a suffix (ed, ing) to a short vowel sound.
- A short vowel is in stop.
- A long vowel sound is in stoat.
hop – hopping – hopped
trot – trotted – trotting
Create some ‘word families’ like those above – make a list in your homework book of all the words you can create.

Remember sometimes the ‘r’ gets doubled up!
- The ‘r’ is doubled if the ‘-fer’ is still stressed when an ending is added – transferring.
- The ‘r’ is not doubled if the ‘-fer’ is no longer stressed – referal.
