The week that was
What an amazing first week class 5/6A have had! I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know all of the pupils in class this week; in turn we have shared some amazing stories from our summer holidays.
We’ve begun reading our new class text, “Secrets of the Sun King“; gone back in time to explore how the Stone Age civilisation made tools and provided for themselves; investigated how we can classify living organisms using Carl Linnaeus’ system; and scored goals in handball! Pupils have been issued with new reading records this week and brought home a new book. Help your child to get the term off to a flying start by encouraging reading for at least 15 minutes per day and recording this in their diary. Our times table focus for homework is our 2s, 5s and 10s. Remember your PE kit for Monday and Wednesday afternoons!
Finally, our certificate winners for this week are…
For great learning…
Luella – really demonstrating our school rule of respect to others when working in class, and producing some excellent handwriting and grammar work. Well done.
For sport and physical activity…
Millie – for showing skill and enthusiasm during our handball sessions. You showed superb defensive skills and teamwork. Well done.
For living and learning…
Alex – You had a really mature attitude when discussing the importance of rules, and respecting the opinions of others. Well done!
Reading: Book club in 3.4
Welcome to Autumn term!
We’ve quickly got into the swing of things and are ready to go with our home reading.
As you know, building a love of reading in your child by reading aloud at home strengthens their language, vocabulary and comprehension skills, and improves their social skills and confidence as you listen to them read.
You’ll have noticed Reading Records and reading books coming home in school bags, and/or assigned an ebook. Please get in touch with your child’s class teacher if this isn’t the case.
At Scholes, children are required to read at home every day for 15 minutes. We ask that a reading activity is completed at home just once a week, brought into school on their Book Club days and signed by parents. The children will be directed which activity to complete each week.
Book club days:
3/4A – Wednesday
3/4B – Wednesday
3/4C – Thursday
- Make a special reading spot.
- Let reading be a special part of every day.
- Ask questions. As you read together, ask questions about the book to build comprehension skills.
- Make time for mistakes.
- Re-read favourite books.
- Read for fun.
Science: classifying living things
This week, we have been learning about Carl Linnaeus – a Swedish naturalist and explorer who was the first to create a system to define species of organisms by name. We worked together to create our own classification keys that would allow us to sort, classify and identify objects from around the classroom. This was based on the physical characteristics of the objects. We found it quite hard to think of questions that would allow us to sort the objects effectively, but we got there eventually. We also applied some great scientific vocabulary.
Welcome to Class 5/6A
A very warm welcome back to all pupils in Class 5/6A. We have had a fantastic day getting to know our new classmates, as well as catching up on everyone’s holiday stories. It seems Class 5/6A were very well travelled over the summer! There has been lots of information passed onto the children today, reinforcing our school rules and values, uniform policy, homework and reading records. Please note that P.E. lessons will take place on Monday and Wednesday afternoons.
All pupils have today chosen a new reading book from the library and brought this home with them. Really get this new school year off to a great start by reading daily at home with your child, and recording this in their reading record. Children are to bring their reading records in to school every Friday.
I look forward to getting to know the pupils more over the coming days and weeks, as well as the parents. Please do stop by and say hello, or ask me any questions you may have.

Is the school day always this short?
Today has flown by. It was fantastic to see the children back in school looking refereshed and ready for a new school year. 5/6C had plenty of stories to tell about their holidays including a best day ever: Putt Stars and Maccys! Whether it was a sleepover or a trip under Niagara Falls, children beamed with joy about their summer holidays.
All children in year 5/6 have visited the library today and received their reading journal. It’s really important that both of these books are kept in your child’s book bag so that they bring them to school each day and read every evening. Share the reading with your child: take turns to read a page each; read to each other on alternate days; take a day off reading and just discuss the book over a cuppa.
It was wonderful to see all the children in the correct uniform. Please help us to maintain these standards throughout the year so that the children look and feel part of a happy and healthy place to learn.
Welcome to Nursery
Welcome to Nursery! We’re looking forward to meeting our new families during our home visits this week. We can’t wait to see you and to begin to get to know each other.
So far this week, we’ve been busily getting Nursery ready for everyone to come and play. Today, we’ve been outside in the sunshine and rain, putting the finishing touches to our lovely new playground. We’ll post some photographs at the end of the week, so make sure you check our Class News page again at the weekend.
Next week, we’ll welcome our older children back to Nursery, too. Make sure you check your child’s transition letter for dates and times.
See you soon!
Getting to know each other
Welcome back to all the children in 5/6B. We’ve had a great day getting to know each other and finding out what everyone got up to in the holiday. I’ve bombarded the children with lots of information today about what the new school year will hold – I’m sure you’ll hear all about it. The children will have brought their new reading record book home – please check your child’s bag. Let’s get off to a great start by reading daily at home, this has such a huge impact on learning. Please record when your child reads and sign to say they have read. Your child will need these in school every Friday, but every day would be even better. Keep working hard on TTR at home also – keep those multiplication facts in the front of our heads!
Please feel free to ask any questions, or come and introduce yourself if we’ve never met. I’m looking forward to a happy and healthy year with 5/6B.
Welcome to Reception!

Lunch menus
Here are the lunch menus until February 2023. Children will be asked to choose each morning, if they are having a school lunch. Have a look through together so they are familiar with the choices.
PE days – when to wear PE kit?
We are continuing to wearing PE kit on PE days. On the days your child has PE, they should come to school in their school uniform PE kit. (Track-suit bottoms instead of shorts would be good on colder days. Footwear : black/brown/grey/white flat shoes which are safe to run around in.)
Footwear on PE days could be children’s ‘school shoes’ which are often a plain ‘trainer’ style anyway, if you want to avoid having to buy 2 pairs of shoes.
Here is a link to our uniform policy.
- 1A (Miss Lowry) – Thursday (swimming) and Friday
- 1,2B (Mrs Latham) – Thursday and Friday (swimming)
- 2C (Miss Young) – Tuesday (swimming) and Friday
Swimming lessons will not take place in the first week. Children will need their swimming kit from week beginning 12 September.
