Class News

Ahoy there matey!

Posted on Friday 15 July 2022 by Mrs Wilkins

This week, our book focus has been ‘The Night Pirate’ and many other pirate books.

The children know so much about Pirates:

They fight.- Adriana

Fire the canon!-Jack

They hunt for gold or treasure!-Max

They sail in a boat.-Ronnie

They wear eye patches.-Sofia

They have pirate hats on and a ship.- Stanley

We made predictions about the book and made some amazing story maps. Each child could re-tell the story using the story maps. The book has some adventurous vocabulary too. We like to stop and discuss any new vocabulary and it’s meaning. We also try to use the new word in a variety of sentences-perhaps you could do this at home.

Story map examples:

Here’s how we extended our learning in ‘pirate provision’ this week:

Transition-On Thursday afternoon all children spent time with their new class teacher for next year. The children really enjoyed this opportunity to be in their new classroom and get to know their new teacher/s and classmates.

D-I-S-C-O!

We had the best time in the hall dancing, playing games and eating our FOSP organised treats. Thankyou FOSP.

Next week:

Sadly, this will be our last week but we will not stop learning or making memories!

Spare bags-please could you send a heavy duty bag (such as a carrier bag or fold-able shopping bag) into school next week. We plan to send each child’s books and special things home. Please name the bag where possible too.

Please could your child draw a picture of themselves in Reception with their friends. If your child could write a sentence about a favourite memory from the year that would be wonderful!

WUSU Crew 2022

Posted on Thursday 14 July 2022 by Mrs Latham

The two Wake Up Shake Up (WUSU) after school clubs have been running this year, after a break during the pandemic. It is great fun keeping active through dance and we have enjoyed making new routines to teach the rest of school. The whole school takes an active break at 10 o clock each day; dancing, running or skipping to contribute towards the NHS guidelines of 60 active minutes each day.

Scholes in Bloom – winning design

Posted on Wednesday 13 July 2022 by Mrs Latham

A group of children went out to meet the Britain in Bloom judges today. The winning designer of the Scholes in Bloom competition was there and everyone admired the planted design in the flowerbed outside school. It looks fabulous!

Design Technology – perfect puppets

Posted on Wednesday 13 July 2022 by Mrs Latham

We have absolutely loved our design technology topic this half term. Sewing has turned into a new-found favourite past time for so many children! The finale of the topic was comparing and evaluating our designs to our finished products. I’m sure you are as impressed as we were with our puppets. The children can’t wait to bring them home to play with and show their families.

Living and Learning : drug education from D:Side

Posted on Tuesday 12 July 2022 by Mrs Latham

We had a visitor from D:Side this week telling us all about how to keep our bodies healthy and safe, as part of our Living and Learning lessons. The children (and adults) were all transfixed by the excellent workshop. Ask your child what they learnt.

Living and Learning: how smoking affects our body

Posted on Tuesday 12 July 2022 by Mr Roundtree

Our visitor today was Dave from D:side who talked to us about the harmful affects of smoking on our bodies.

Dave was a very informative speaker with lots of lovely resources for us to see and get involved with. We had lots of questions for Dave!

The children learned about what a cigarette was made from …

What’s inside?

The tar from cigarettes sticks to your lungs …

Some other chemicals that are inside cigarettes. Did you know that there are over 3000 …

The importance of keeping our lungs healthy (where they are in our body)

We must keep our heart healthy too …

How to say no …

You can always walk away from peer pressure …

Stand up to someone who tries to make you smoke a cigarette!

Why not ask your child about our D:side visit today?

Muscles working together

Posted on Tuesday 12 July 2022 by Mr Roundtree

Today, we’ve been learning all about muscles.

Background: Muscles can pull bones, but they can’t push them back to the original position. So they work in pairs of flexors and extensors. The flexor contracts to bend a limb at a joint. Then, when the movement is completed, the flexor relaxes and the extensor contracts to extend or straighten the limb at the same joint.

We made some videos about the movement that happens and the muscles that work. Check them out below:

Living and learning: I understand some drugs are harmful

Posted on Tuesday 12 July 2022 by Mrs Hogarth

What is a drug? This is the question that year 5/6 have been considering this week. We have discussed all types of drugs – illegal and legal – this includes over-the-counter and prescription medicines. We have talked about the effects drugs have on you and the risks that they can cause. The children then looked at different scenarios that included drugs such as caffeine or alcohol and they had to discuss if they put a person at low, medium or high risk.

Sports day – KS2 Competitive

Posted on Monday 11 July 2022 by Mrs Latham

The key stage 2 children in years 3, 4 5 and 6 enjoyed a lovely sunny sports day last week after a break since 2019 because of the pandemic. There was some very competitive races but also lots of support for everyone for joining in too. Thank you to all the families and friends who came. The adult races at the end were particularly entertaining!

Fun outdoors

Posted on Friday 08 July 2022 by Reception Team

This week, we began to make our own pirate ship using a large cardboard box. We’ve painted it and have made a flag; it’s almost ready to set sail!

Outside, children have enjoyed using the equipment to play throwing and catching games. They’ve also continued to develop their balancing skills on our obstacle course.

We also made our own shelter using clippings from a very overgrown tree in the Nursery garden. Children loved helping to weave the branches through the string and bamboo sticks.
