One Hundred Decker Rocket

Posted on Friday 11 March 2022 by Miss Hague

This week, we have read a story based on a space adventure and some messy aliens.

The Hundred Decker Rocket by [Mike Smith]

Before reading we made some predictions.

They going to space. Jacob

I think they will fly to space to see if there are aliens. Penny

A rocket with one hundred floors. Stanley

Rocket going up. Prisha

After reading, we designed and made our own deck to make a reception 45 decker rocket.

There were some wonderful ideas such as swimming pools, jacuzzies, reading dens, party rooms and gardens.

The children also enjoyed writing about the story or what they could see in the images from the book.

In maths, we have composed seven. We used lots of different resources such as Numicon, multilink and pegs to show our parts.

In the areas this week, we have explored space as well as seeds and growing plants.

Notices

We will be sending home new reading records next week which should be sent into school on a Friday in your child’s bookbag.

This is the place where you will be able to check what book your child has read in school and will be on their e-library.

After you have read with your child at home, you can add comments to share with your child’s class teacher.

Wanted – Baby photographs!

Posted on Wednesday 09 March 2022 by Reception Team

Next week, we’ll be learning all about growing up and looking at how we change as we get older.

It would be great if we could look at some photographs of children when they were babies and toddlers. If you are able to, please send us an email with  a photograph of your child as a baby and a toddler. We’ll use these in group time and will also look at them in Nursery throughout the week.   scholesnursery@spherefederation.org

Living and learning : Health and Prevention

Posted on Tuesday 08 March 2022 by Mrs Latham

Our Science and Living and Learning lessons have been all about microbes, handwashing, health and preventing illness this week.

We have talked about how microbes can be harmful but also how some can be good for us. We made microbes out of modelling clay deciding whether they were virus, fungi and bacteria.

Washing our hands is really important. All the children could all talk about this, with our experiences of Covid-19!

Living and learning: I recognise the importance of personal hygiene including hand washing

Posted on Tuesday 08 March 2022 by Mrs Hogarth

This week in living and learning, we discussed the importance of keeping our hands clean – this has been particularly important over the last couple of years. We talked about what being healthy means and how to we keep ourselves as healthy as possible. Who is responsible for us being healthy? Ourselves? Parents? Doctors?

How do we know when we are ill? The class contributed to a Jamboard and listed ways in which we can tell if we are ill. We noticed that the symptoms we suffered, were out of the ordinary.

We continued the lesson by learning about allergies and vaccinations and how these can make us feel unwell and also fight against illness.

Get ready, get set … read!

Posted on Tuesday 08 March 2022 by Mr Roundtree

With only 4 weeks to go until Easter, we’ve launched a reading challenge for our Year 3/4 children.

The challenge is to read one book a week and bring in your reading record to get it signed and checked. If the book is long (too long for a week’s reading), then it can also be counted as one book.

If children read more than one book, then that can also read a bonus book!

We’ll keep a tally in school to count up all the books the children have read. We’ll also get chance to share books and recommend any great reads.

There will be prizes for all challengers – so get ready and read!

In our reading session today we looked at authorfy.com

One of our favourite authors – Andy Griffiths – is our author of the week. We watched his 10 minute video which inspired us to draw the next layer of 130th story Treehouse. Check out our drawings below…

Y2 grammar and spelling – contractions

Posted on Monday 07 March 2022 by Mrs Latham

We have (or should I say we’ve) been learning all about contractions in Year 2. There is a super video here showing how they work. We also made some of our own by chopping out and screwing up unwanted letters to make the apostrophe.

Maths fluency – new app

Posted on Monday 07 March 2022 by Mrs Latham

The children have been using a new app we have on the iPads called White Rose 1 minute maths (it’s free to download).

This is a fantastic app to use alongside Numbots in order to support your child with their maths fluency – knowing number facts instantly.

A huge thank you!

Posted on Sunday 06 March 2022 by Mrs Hogarth

Last half term, we set the children a maths challenge in which they had to learn some number facts or some multiplication tables. We asked the children to collect sponsors and see how much money we could raise for our school charity (Leeds Autism Services) and our school. You have absolutely gone above and beyond what we anticipated. The total so far that we’ve raised is £2318.15! This is just amazing and we can’t thank you enough – you are a very generous school community. This huge total will be split between the charity and school. Keep an eye out for more fundraising this half term, but again, thank you so much.

Super swimmers

Posted on Friday 04 March 2022 by Mrs Latham

We have two super swimmers in school, competing at city and regional level. They recently won gold medals in the 200m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley at the Yorkshire Swimming Championships. Keep a look out for them in the future. A massive well done from everyone at school!

World Book Day in 1A

Posted on Friday 04 March 2022 by Mrs Latham

1A had a wonderful time on World Book Day.

We all enjoyed sharing our favourite stories and what we liked about them. We also talked about the characters we came dressed as.
