DT: design process

Posted on Sunday 27 June 2021 by Mr Roundtree

In our DT lessons this week, we’ve been evaluating existing products to gain some inspiration and ideas for our own designs.

We’ve also begun to explore our ideas using TechCard and next we’ll be drawing our final designs.

The design criteria for our go kart prototypes:

– move by rolling on wheels
– have a steering system
– a platform to sit on and not fall out of
– a braking system (extra, aspirational challenge)

When I grow up…

Posted on Friday 25 June 2021 by Miss Hague

This week, we have spent time thinking about what we might like to do when we grow up. The children loved expressing what they enjoyed doing and what job might suit them.

I want to be a teacher because I love learning. Juveria

I want to be an astronaut because I like planets. Dexter

I would like to be a builder. Freddy

I would like to be a ballerina. I like dancing. Clara

I want to be a police officer to fight baddies. Lewis

I want to be a babysitter. Felicity

I want to be safari keeper. Bradley

In Maths, we have explored the number 18. We represented 18 in lots of ways using Numicon, part whole models, 10 frames and number sentences.

Learning is everywhere in reception. The children have been busy completing classroom challenges and creating their own.

They have been measuring themselves using cubes and tape measures.

Hooray! We’ve made it to our last day of isolating at home! We hope that you have a lovely weekend and we can’t wait to see you all again in Nursery next week.

If you enjoyed ‘squiggling’ this morning, don’t forget to send us a video if you decide to create your own at home today.

Our final music video for this week is a rhyme all about a rocket. You’ll need to find some things that you can drum with, such as a saucepan/cardboard box and a wooden spoon.  Have fun drumming in time to the  Rocket rhyme!

Story time

For today’s story time, we thought that you might enjoy watching a story written by one of our favourite authors, Julia Donaldson. Grab a snack and sit back and enjoy watching ‘The Snail and the Whale‘.

Design Technology

Posted on Thursday 24 June 2021 by Mrs Hogarth

We have been busy this week selecting the equipment that we will need to make our ‘Eggy’ cars. The children have completed their final designs and we are so close to making them now. The children were introduced to all the tools they could use and they had a go at safely using the equipment. the children were all able to talk about how to keep everyone safe when using tools, such as hand saws. Each group was set the challenge of joining two pieces of dowel together. They first had to cut the dowel to size and then use PVA glue and some card to reinforce the joint. They all created an L-shaped joint. The children were incredibly sensible using the tools and we didn’t lose any fingers!
