Captain Tom Challenge …done!

Posted on Wednesday 05 May 2021 by Mr Roundtree

A huge well done to all our Y3/4E children who absolutely smaxhed our Captain Tom challenge.

In the class, our children set themselves the challenge of 100 basketball baskets for each team.

It took us quite a while but the children were committed and dedicated to the cause. All of our children achieved highly and either completed the 100 baskets individually or as a team.

Here are some  pictures …

Living and Learning: Making Healthy Choices

Posted on Wednesday 05 May 2021 by Mr Freeman

This week, our school living and learning statement is…

I recognise the importance of personal hygiene including handwashing

Since returning to school, Years 5 and 6 are taking extra care and time to wash our hands regularly. On a daily basis, we aim to wash our hands every time we exit and enter the classroom – this ensures that we don’t transfer germs across different environments.

We know that personal hygiene is important for ourselves, and those around us, too.

New School Charity

Posted on Tuesday 04 May 2021 by Mrs Hogarth

Following our manic day on Friday completing the Captain Tom 100 challenge, the Junior Leadership Team have selected our new school charity. All the classes selected a charity of their choice and the JLT members brought the ideas to the meeting. The children all voted and our new charity is….

The National Autistic Society.

If you would like to know more about the charity, please follow this link.

Thank you to everyone that donated to school for the 100 challenge. We had some incredibly generous donations. We managed to raise £185.09 and this will be donated straight away to the charity. Well done and thank you everyone for your hard work!

1KN Captain Tom Moore 100 Challenge

We’ve been raising money to support our new school charity, National Autistic Society.

For 1KN’s Captain Tom 100 Challenge, we were challenging ourselves to complete 100 minutes of skipping throughout the day. Every child contributed to help us reach our target and all the children demonstrated superb resilience.

A massive thank you to everyone that donated money.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Posted on Friday 30 April 2021 by Reception Team

We had a special delivery in Nursery this week; children were very excited to find out what was inside the little cardboard box.
Inside, we found 5 tiny, spiky  caterpillars! We’ve been checking on them everyday, and just like ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, they’re very hungry and are getting bigger and bigger each day.

During group time, we learned about the life cycle of a butterfly and counted pieces of fruit that The Very Hungry Caterpillar ate. In the Fiddly Fingers area, children strengthened their finger muscles by ‘munching’ holes into leaves.

Following on from our obstacle course last week, children have continued this interest, by creating their own using the wooden blocks and planks.

We’ve also noticed children have been role playing ‘police’ and ‘doctors’ since we returned to Nursery so we’ve introduced a new Emergency Services role play area in the Sunshine Room.

Next week, as well as monitoring the growth of our caterpillars, we’ll find out about bees and hopefully enjoy sampling some different types of honey at snack time.

Well done!

Today, we successfully completed 100 minutes of WUSU – not all in one go! What an achievement! We all felt really proud to complete the Captain Tom challenge.

In addition to this, we have been carefully editing our writing to check that we are including the Must Dos.

Well done – a successful day!

Our Incredible Imaginations!

Posted on Friday 30 April 2021 by Reception team

It is the last full term of the school year and the children are showing us every day, just how much their confidence has grown since September.

They are coming up with even more of their own ideas, having the confidence to explore them and show them, inviting others to get involved and extending their own learning whilst doing so.

This confidence can be seen in their writing and maths too, as they jump straight into challenges with amazing ‘can do’ attitudes and increasingly bring their creations to the adults, proud of their achievements.

Take a look at some of the things our Reception superstars have been up to this week…

Home-Link Challenge

The children have been closely observing the classroom caterpillars this week and they can talk about the different stages of the butterfly life cycle. Next week, our story is Look Out Ladybird! and we would like you to help your child research the life cycle of a ladybird.

Is it the same as the butterfly cycle?

What are the differences?

Are there the same number of stages/ transformations?

Also, let us know how you researched. Did you use a search engine on the internet? Did you read it in a book or magazine?

-Please ensure bookbags are in school on Tuesdays and Fridays.

-Please send your child to school in their PE kits on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Captain Tom 100 Challenge

We’re still alive!

5/6 S successfully completed our 100 challenge today! We managed to run for 100 minutes. Well done to everyone who took part and it definitely wasn’t easy. Everyone helped us to reach our target and a small team of very dedicated runners helped us make it! Even a broken foot didn’t stop one person from joining in!

Parents can look forward to a peaceful evening as all the children should be exhausted. I’m not sure I’m going to be able to walk tomorrow! A massive thank you to everyone that donated money – it’s greatly appreciated.

Here are some action shots of the day…

Computing programmers

Posted on Friday 30 April 2021 by Mr Catherall

We’re loving our current topic: computing.

We’ve been learning about staying safe online and we’ve been taking on the role of programmers. After some ‘offline’ learning, where we recapped what algorithms are (ask you child what an algorithm is), we’ve been using Scratch Jr to practise our programming skills.

So far, we’ve programmed our Sprite (Wondering what a sprite is? Ask your child to explain this to you – they should know.) to kick a football into a net and we’ve used repetition to create an underwater animation with several sprites programmed  to complete different tasks.

Ask your child how they’re finding this topic. What are they enjoying? When have they been challenged? Why is this learning relevant to them?

We’ll be getting more and more confident using some programming vocabulary over the next few weeks. Help at home by using these words with your child, or testing them, or simply asking them about what they mean…
