Design & Technology
In our topic lessons this half-term, we’ll be learning all about design and technology. We’ll follow the process that people working in DT complete in the real world: we’ll research and design our product, we’ll make our product and, finally, we’ll evaluate it.
We’ll making a small prototype of a go-kart using tech card – so we’ll get plenty of opportunities to be creative and practical.
Help at home by asking your child what they’ve been learning about school. Encourage them to use the vocabulary they’ve learnt, too (shown in the below table).
Super Scientists!
This half-term, in our science lessons, we’re studying biology. We’ll be learning all about animals (including humans) with a specific focus on teeth and eating.
Help at home by regularly asking your child what they’ve learnt in their science lessons recently. When discussing their learning, encourage your child to use the correct scientific vocabulary. The below table shows you what words we’ll be using alongside the definition we’ll be using in class.
canine | A pointy tooth used for gripping food. |
incisor | A flat, sharp-edged tooth in the front of the mouth that’s used for cutting and tearing food. |
molar | A tooth used for grinding food at the back of the mouth. |
enamel | The hard covering of the tooth. |
digestion | The process of breaking down food. |
energy | Used to help us move, grow and repair our body. |
stomach | A bag of muscle used in the first part of digestion. |
oesophagus | The scientific name for the food pipe. |
Living and Learning : Body image
We’ve been talking about all of the exciting things our bodies allow us to do. We enjoyed listening to this story.
I use my body to play football.
I play with my friends with my body.
My body lets me hug my family.
Skin can get cuts and it can make itself better.
Our bodies let us know what they need to stay well and feel good but they don’t use words to talk to us. They use feelings. They send us messages about what they need through the way we feel.
It feels like butterflies in my tummy when I am nervous.
I feel warm when I am happy.
It hurts when I feel sad.

I like your hair.
You are a good friend.
You make me laugh.
I like it when you are helpful.
We don’t like cricket…we love it!
We have Yorkshire Cricket coach, Jamie Sykes, coming into school over the next half term. All classes from Year 1 to Year 6 will receive some cricket coaching over the next 6 weeks. He set some very important ‘homework’…to watch some cricket, if you can! #chancetoshine #yorkshirecricket
Holiday tales and ice-creams
It was great to see so many happy faces return to Nursery and we loved hearing all about your family outings during our group time conversations. Lots of children enjoyed trips to the seaside and role play in our mud kitchen area soon turned into children selling ice-creams!
We developed this throughout the week, adding a few ice-cream themed enhancements to the mud kitchen. Children had been enjoying colour mixing before the holidays, so we followed this interest to make some ice-cream signs for our shop. We talked about the different flavours that children liked and tried to mix some colours to match them.
Children have enjoyed playing ring games and using our new castle small world area. As the weather was so hot at the start of the week, we moved lots of our provision into the shade and we even enjoyed having a ‘picnic’ snack time outside.
We’re going to continue with our learning about the coast next week. We’ll be exploring the texture, size and shape of shells, using sandy playdough and creating our own foam ice-creams with sprinkles in the sensory area.
If you’ve been to the seaside recently and have a photograph that you’d like to send us, please email it to scholesf1@spherefederation.org and we’ll display them in our seaside small world area for children to talk about their trip with their friends.
Oh baby, baby!
Thank-you so much for sending in your child’s baby photograph/s. We have ALL thoroughly enjoyed looking at them and talking about how we have changed since we were born. There have been so many changes and stages of development that are still ongoing for our amazing 4 and 5 year olds. We are really proud of how much Reception children have learnt in the past school year!
There is still time to send your child’s photograph into school if you haven’t already done so.
Just for fun, and because the children have enjoyed guessing who the baby photos are, we have made a ‘Who’s Who?’ baby montage of the adults in Reception. Can you match the adults to their baby photo? Answers are at the bottom of the post.
The weather has been glorious (finally) and of course we have been making the most of the outdoor area with a little less mud. Take a look at what we have been up to…
To name just a few, we have: explored tall grass on the large school field; pressed flowers that we picked; found rare mini-beasts; thrown a javelin; dressed babies; made ice-creams; found ways to make 16 using sticks; looked at dead bees and shown a seal bone to the class.
Enjoy your weekend. We look forward to our learning journey next week.
1-Miss Parling, 2- Mrs Wilkins, 3-Mrs Allen-Kelly, 4-Miss Logan, 5- Miss Booth 6-Mrs Myers.

Reading and writing
This week, we have been learning about Aesop’s Fables. Our reading fluency text has been The Tortoise and the Hare.
We talked about the message in the story and looked at some key vocabulary. Next week, the children will read and retell the story, draw a story map to help them remember the sequence of events and do some independent writing.
Help at home by asking your child if they can tell you the story of The Tortoise and the Hare.
