Home learning heroes

Posted on Friday 12 February 2021 by Mrs Latham

Thank you for all the emails, photos and learning that you have shared during our zoom sessions. Everyone has done their best in these difficult circumstances and that is all we can ask for. Enjoy a well-earned half term break.

Have a listen to this super reading fluency.

Sometimes, learning goes off in a different direction – which is fine! Feeling proud of an achievement is great motivation to learn. Making a sock dispenser, using toys to count, baking a cake or finding out which materials are waterproof are all valuable lessons!

And to make learning even more exciting…some people like to dress up…

Happy Half Term – stay active with our 3 Peaks Challenge!

Posted on Friday 12 February 2021 by Mr Roundtree

Well done to William, Sam and Emma who have been actively counting their steps on our ‘3 peaks challenge’.

If you would like to keep up with the challenge over half term, then see details below.

The Sphere Year 3/4 Team would absolutely love you to be part of this awesome challenge this February and March. We want to get you walking or running (or scooting!) as much as you can over the next two months.

Every time you do a walk or run, add the distance completed (and your time taken to complete this) in your chart. We will be adding up everyone’s distances each week to see how many of us can ‘climb’ the National three peaks. In topic this week and next, we will be learning about some mountains in the UK, so what could be better than a virtual mountain climbing challenge!

The three mountains in the challenge are the highest in each country in the UK:

  • Snowdon, in Wales (1085m) Distance: 7 miles / 11.75 km
  • Scafell Pike, in England (978m) Distance: 5.5 miles / 9 km
  • Ben Nevis, in Scotland (1345m) Distance: 10.75 miles / 17km

You can record your steps taken (paces). The whole route is 37.75 kilometres long, and the average human step (or pace) is 0.75 metres. So you have to take 50,333 steps in total to complete the Three Peaks. Recording steps (paces) taken is easy – you can use a Fitbit, pedometer or just count your steps. A phone can track how many steps you take and how far you walk all by itself, if you walk with an adult who has a phone.

The idea is to make this as much fun as possible, to motivate you to get outdoors and maybe encourage as many of your family and your friends to do the same thing.

You don’t have to do the whole route. Maybe you can choose to ‘walk’ just one mountain, or two – it’s up to you and what you can achieve.

Throughout the month, we will share photos and graphics of the distances you’ve travelled. From this, we can show who has travelled up the peaks and what location we can reach together. Hopefully, we can find ways to help you during this challenge and through this you can share stories, pictures and videos with those joining in this challenge. All ‘Three peaks in eight weeks’ challenge walkers will receive certificates for effort and participation:-

Mountain 1 = Bronze; Mountain 2 = Silver; Mountain 3 = Gold.

Happy Half Term!

Posted on Friday 12 February 2021 by Mrs Hogarth

Well, we’ve made it! Another half term of lockdown done. You should all be very proud of yourselves for working so hard on your home learning. A massive thank you to those parents that have kept in regular contact and sent positive messages to the teachers – it has really helped keep us motivated when juggling video lessons, teaching and planning among many other things. Thanks to everyone that has continued to send their work in –  we love to see how well you are doing at home.

The daily Zooms have continued to be a success in 5/6S and well done to all those children that have had the confidence to be one of our daily quiz masters. I love to see you all and have a giggle, even though I never win at the quizzes! I still can’t believe that I didn’t win the Michael Buble quiz!

Anyway, I hope you all have a great half term. Make sure you get out for some fresh air and spend some quality time with your families. Maybe some baking might be on the cards – photos will need to be seen by me though. Yum yum!

Hope to see you all very soon.

Well done to those of you who have continued with TTRockstars and/or Numbots. I can see that so many of you are practising.

Have a happy, healthy and safe half term break. We have some exciting learning planned for you next half term!

Maths-

Play number stacking pancakes.

Make some pancakes: Draw around a circle template on a piece of paper or card. Cut the circles out and write the digits 0-10 on the pancakes.

If you have a spatula and a plate that’s great but you don’t need them.

Mix up the pancakes and spread them out on the carpet. Your child can scoop up the correct pancake with the spatula and put it on the plate. There are a few things that you can do with this game.

1.      Order the pancakes from 0-10 in ascending order. Stacking them one at a time on the plate/in a pile.

2.      Order the pancakes in descending order from 10-0.

3.      Ask your child different numbers at random to select and put on the plate.

4.      Play ‘run and splat’ the number when it is said.

5.      Time yourself. How long does it take you to stack your pancakes in order? Can you beat your time? Can you beat your adult?

6.      Put the pancakes in a random pile, face down. Decide on a fun action e.g. star jumps, jumping on the spot, running to the kitchen, turning around, hopping etc. Take it in turns to take the top pancake, whatever number you get, that’s how many of the chosen action you must do.

(A few ideas: This activity can be extended to use different numbers to challenge your child. You might add 11-20).

-Can you draw and label a picture to show what happened?

Story time- The Magic Paintbrush with Mrs Allen-Kelly

2.      How did Shen escape from prison?

3.      How did the villagers feel when Shen returned home with her magic brush?

4.      If you had a magic paintbrush that could make anything come to life, what would you draw? Perhaps you could also have a go at painting it at home.

Click here for the no cook play dough recipe.

Make a wolf mask or picture!

Maybe an adult in your house will help you to make your own delicious pancakes. What topping might you choose?

Using construction toys, can you build Mr Wolf’s Village and the houses for all of the different characters.

Physical Development

Get Moving Outside! Why not take your numbered pancakes, from the Maths activity, outside. Hide them in the garden then find them. Take a number and match it with objects e.g. 3 leaves. Do laps of your garden to match a number. Make an obstacle course and use your numbered pancakes at each station.
