Safeguarding – pedestrian safety and road safety

Posted on Thursday 10 October 2019 by Mrs Latham

All the year 1 and 2s took part in some superb pedestrian and road safety teaching from the Influencing Travel Behaviour Staff at Leeds City Council. We hope you agree how important these skills are for keeping our children safe and teaching them how to keep themselves safe.

Making our Treehouses

Posted on Wednesday 09 October 2019 by Mr Roundtree

And they’re off!

We set the children off on their practical activity this week of making their  treehouses out of wood.

We measured, sawed, glued, cut, stuck … and waited patiently.

We worked together …

Look how carefully we out our pieces together!

We took a safe risk … sawing is fun!

We concentrated hard. Hopefully, they’ll be ready for painting and decorating tomorrow.

Living and Learning

Posted on Wednesday 09 October 2019 by Mrs Hogarth

Year 5/6 thought about the 8Rs this week. With their peers, they discussed times in and out of school when they had used one or more of the 8 Rs. They then concentrated on which they had applied during their learning recently.

Autumn bags

Posted on Tuesday 08 October 2019 by Reception Team

So far this week, we’ve been enjoying talking about the contents of children’s autumn bags. Thank you to everyone who has returned them already. Don’t worry if you haven’t had chance to fill them yet, there’s still time! Please bring them to Nursery when they’re full.

Children have enjoyed telling us all about the things they have collected and where they found them. It sounds like lots of you have had fun visiting local parks or looking for autumn things on the walk to Nursery. We’ve heard some good descriptive language (shiny, spiky, smooth) and the conkers are providing endless opportunities to talk about size. We love to line them up in size order!

Outside, some children helped to harvest our (mini!) carrots and we enjoyed eating them at snack time.  We have also noticed that many children are interested in ‘rolling’ objects at the moment. To facilitate this, we created a conker drop game outside. It was great fun trying to roll the conkers into pots at the bottom. We carefully counted how many we managed to get in to each pot at the end.

Super scientists – dissolving

Posted on Tuesday 08 October 2019 by Mr Catherall

This morning, we’re being scientists and carrying out an investigation. We’re all learning about dissolving.

The year 5s are finding out whether a range of substances (gravy, salt, sugar, coffee, tea and rice) dissolve in cold water whilst our year 6s have designed their own experiment using the same equipment. One group is investigating what effect the temperature of the water has on wether a substance dissolves, one group is investigating the effect of stirring and another group is seeing if coffee will stop dissolving when you put more in.

As we experimented, we recorded our results and used scientific vocabulary to explain what we were observing. Specifically, we used the words solute (a substance that dissolves), solvent (the liquid that a solute dissolves in) and a solution (the mixture of a solid and a liquid). Ask you child what they investigated, what they found out, and what each of the three previously mentioned words mean.

Counting conkers

Posted on Friday 04 October 2019 by Mrs Latham

The year 1 children have enjoyed using the conkers we collected on our walk to count precisely. They have used ten frames to count them, counting in 10s. Help at home by counting in 10s. 1,2V had 816 in their collection. 1K didn’t have quite as many!

Amazing art

We observed our surroundings closely on our walk around Scholes this week. We have used our observational skills to draw trees. Here are some super examples.
