Living and Learning – I make choices about money

Posted on Friday 24 May 2019 by Mr Roundtree

This week, our Year 3 children took part in a Moneysense Workshop and were asked to budget for a party.

A volunteer (we learned about what this word means) from Natwest bank came in to school t help us with the budgeting and organisation of the parties.

Learning objectives:
• Identify what makes a good birthday party
• Plan and organise a party by making                         Image result for party balloons
decisions about what to include within
a set budget
• Identify costs and show an understanding
of value for money

What makes a good party?

A Diamond 9 Activity (most important at the top, gradually becoming less important as you move to the bottom).

We voted democratically for the type of party we wanted.

Each group had £200 to spend on a party for 10 people.

Using a price list activity sheet, each person had to fully cost the aspect of the party they were responsible for. As they were to be competing with the other groups, the children had to budget well to provide the best-value party.

Then, the children had to present their party budgets to the rest of the class.

Our volunteer was amazed at the skills set the children used  – and they all came in under budget!

A fantastic morning of resilience, resourcefulness, remembering and risk-taking – many of our 8Rs for learning skills.

Holiday Writing

Posted on Friday 24 May 2019 by Reception team

It’s half term, the children are very excited to have a week off! Many of them have been talking about the exciting things they have planned.

We have sent home a holiday snapshot sheet for your child to write about their half term. Please support them to be as independent as possible with their writing.

Please bring these back to school so we can share their holiday news on Monday 3rd June.

Have a lovely holiday!

Living and Learning: Money Matters themed week (raising money for charity)

Posted on Friday 24 May 2019 by Reception team

The children were so excited to take part in the Five Star Sports challenge on Tuesday; keeping active and raising money for our school charity (Cancer Research). They all took part in the challenges and supported each other amazingly. Try to get some sponsors and bring back forms after the half term break.

Thank you for all the 1p and 2p donations. The children have enjoyed using them to make various pictures and designs. We also used this opportunity to practise our counting skills. We counting the coins into groups of 10. In total we managed to raise £14.

Below are some of the comments the children made about their coin creation:

  • “It’s a rainbow.”
  • “It’s a camper van, because I like camper vans.”
  • “It’s a little cake.”
  • “I’ve done a dress.”
  • A lot of the children enjoyed making their name.

Chicks

Over the past few weeks we have watched our chick eggs change into 7 fluffy and cheepy chicks. We have enjoyed having them in F2 and they have stimulated lots of lovely writing. Today, we said goodbye as they were growing too big for our classroom.

Triathlon Fun!

The Year 5’s had an amazing morning participating in the Brownlee Foundation Triathlon at John Smeaton. After the initial challenge of putting a bright orange swimming cap on, the children embarked on the race! They showed great determination and team spirit, with a dash of perseverance. They were rewarded with an amazing medal at the end. Well done!

Money Trails

As part of our money week, we have been collecting 1p and 2p coins to raise money for Cancer Research.

All of the copper makes a beautiful shiny pattern as we found out today. We decorated our playground with copper coins, creating fantastic designs.

Here are some of our creations …

There’s still time to gather up your copper coins and raise more money!

Sharing Stories

Posted on Sunday 19 May 2019 by Reception team

Last week, the year 5 children read with us each day. It was lovely to share our love of reading. The children were able to sit in small groups and listen to a variety of stories.

Listening to stories is a vital part of your child’s development as it sparks their imagination and stimulates curiosity. In Literacy and during our Stop and Read time we have enjoyed lots of familiar traditional stories. We encourage the children to use narrative language to re-tell their favourite stories. We have also modelled changing parts of stories (the characters, setting or events) to encourage the children to add their own twist.

Challenge – 3 cubes

Can your child re-tell their favourite story? Can they use narrative language? Can they change part of the story?

Please email any quotes from your child. This will support us in our assessment by providing evidence towards the Speaking strand of the EYFS.

They develop their own narratives and explanations by
connecting ideas or events.

Living and Learning : Friends

Posted on Thursday 16 May 2019 by Mrs Latham

The children discussed the qualities that they consider most important in their friends and also what they need to be to be a good friend. We also talked about what we can do to make things better if friendships go wrong.

The children had to complete a ‘Diamond 9’; discussing, negotiating and compromising. They ordered the qualities from most important at the top, to least important at the bottom.

A good friend doesn’t have to be talkative. Good friends can be quiet and not talk much too.
