Living and Learning – dealing with emotions : change or loss

Posted on Thursday 10 May 2018 by Mrs Latham

In our Living and Learning lessons this week, we’ve continued to talk about dealing with big emotions. In particular this week we have discussed dealing with loss, bereavement and change. We have used mindfulness techniques to help us cope with the physical changes that happen to our bodies when we deal with big emotions. We also watched The Small Creature and talked about how these feelings can be overwhelming but they don’t last forever.

Marvellous maths

Some of the Year 1 and 2s enjoyed applying maths skills and collaborating with each other to complete puzzles and games today. Maths is fun!

Making pasta!

Posted on Thursday 10 May 2018 by Reception team

Today, we made fresh pasta!

This week in maths, we’ve been looking at how to find half of an object or a group of objects. We’ve been looking at pasta recipes and halving the ingredients. Once we had halved the recipe we were able to make our own pasta!

We used half the eggs and measured half of the flour. Some children were able to work out that if half of two is one then half of 200 is 100! After, we mixed eggs and flour in a bowl. Next, we used our muscles to knead the dough – a fantastic way to build the muscles needed to write.

After the dough had been in the fridge over lunchtime, we used the pasta machine to roll out the dough – another great way to build the muscles needed to write.

Every time the dough came out of the machine we had to fold it in half.

“Two groups that are the same amount!”

We talked about one more and one less when moving up and down the settings on the pasta machine.

The pasta got longer and longer as we put it through the pasta machine – we needed lots of helpers! Everyone worked very well as a team.

Later, we cooked the pasta with some tomatoes and tasted it.

Home Link – Plants and growth

Posted on Monday 07 May 2018 by Reception Team

We’re going to continue talking about last week’s home link activity as not many of you had chance to be creative! Please scroll down to the ‘Plants and growth’ Home Link post from last week.

We’re also going to learn about the letter ‘n’ sound.  If you find something beginning with the letter n, please bring it in for our sound shelf. Remember to write your child’s name on it.

Bikes, bubbles and bunnies!

Posted on Monday 07 May 2018 by Reception Team

We were really pleased that Peter Rabbit’s friend, George, could visit us on Tuesday afternoon. The children were really well behaved; they asked Gemma lots of questions about how to look after rabbits and they were gentle and calm around George. Photographs to follow!

Children have been fascinated with the tadpoles and have really enjoyed observing them closely with magnifying glasses and finding out about their life cycles in non-fiction books. They’re looking forward to watching them develop into tiny froglets!

On Friday morning, we were really lucky to be able to watch the ladies Tour De Yorkshire race from the playground. We took the flags that we had made and waved them, cheering as the cyclists, flashing police bikes and a helicopter went past. Afterwards, we stayed with the older children in school to watch a skipping performance and we took part in Wake Up Shake Up.

Week 3 – What are we learning this week?

We’re going to continue our learning about growth and life cycles, focussing on plants this week. We will learn:

  • about the life cycle of a bean plant. We will plant our own seeds in bags and cups so that we can closely watch what happens. We’re hoping to see something similar to this video.
  • about the letter sound ‘n’. Listen to the Jolly Phonics ‘n’ song.
  • to operate a remote-controlled toy around Mr McGregor’s garden.
  • to use positional language to describe where Peter Rabbit is hiding. There’s a video on YouTube that might give you more of an idea of the type of language that children need to be able to use. For example, Peter Rabbit is… in, on top of, underneath, behind the table.
  • about bubbles – they seem to be a common interest amongst many children at the moment!

What makes a good toy?

Posted on Monday 07 May 2018 by Mrs Latham

We used the diamond 9 technique, which promotes oracy, to discuss what makes a good toy in our topic lesson. It was interesting to hear the differing views of the children.

I think a good toy should be multi-player so you can play with your friends.

I like toys to last a long time and not break!

I really like electronic toys.

Tour de Yorkshire in Scholes

Posted on Monday 07 May 2018 by Mrs Latham

We enjoyed the excitement of the Tour de Yorkshire coming through Scholes on Friday. Each class decorated a bike to display and the whole school went outside to watch the women’s race speed past.  We did some WuSu (Wake up, Shake up) dances while we were waiting and the Year 4 skipping team showed us their skipping dance from the skipping competition, too. It was a day to remember for sure!

Well done to the golden star children from F2.

Writing warriors!

Posted on Monday 07 May 2018 by Reception team

We’re very proud of our writing warriors this week! Writing warriors are children who have been chosen by Wiz the writing warrior to complete important writing missions.

Since becoming writing warriors, we’ve seen an excellent change in attitude to writing. The children are excited to write to complete missions and will persevere when writing challenging words. We have seen a huge difference in the writing warriors writing and Wiz is very impressed. If your child is a writing warrior have a look at the writing warrior folder in the classroom. You can see the fantastic writing missions they’ve been completing!

Well done, writing warriors!
