Living & Learning: budgets and banks

Posted on Thursday 09 November 2023 by Mr Lindsay

We have been very fortunate to have several visitors this week to discuss money matters in year 56: Virgin Money representatives, Wetherby Food Bank and also Mrs Quirk (Sphere Federation Business Manager).

Mrs Quirk talked about how taxes help to fund our school and showed children a breakdown of how we spend our money. Children were shocked at how much money is spent of toilet rolls each year!

Children have learned about the difference between a credit and debit card. They have discussed the advantges and disadvantages of each.

They have also learned about what tax is and why it is so important.

At home, discuss some of the major expenses your household has to pay for each month. Discuss the benefits of using a bank account and what our taxes are used for.

Living and learning : coin trail

Posted on Wednesday 08 November 2023 by Mrs Latham

We’re going to make a ‘coin trail’ on Friday using 1p and 2p coins. If you can send any into school to help with this, donations will be counted and sent to Cancer Research (our current school charity).

We’re hoping to spell out SCHOLES in coins!

Living and learning : Me and my money (themed week)

Posted on Wednesday 08 November 2023 by Mrs Latham

We have been talking all about money in our classes this week.

Where does money come from?

How do we keep it safe?

How can you earn money?

What is the difference between needs and wants?

When can we spend or save?

This book was useful in our discussions.

We have also been identifying, sorting and counting money in our maths lessons.

This game on the Top Marks website is great for learning about money.

Living and learning – money week

Posted on Tuesday 07 November 2023 by Mrs Hogarth

As part of our themed money week, we enjoyed a visit from some representatives from a bank. The session was full of information about how a bank can help you. They explained how savings accounts work and the other types of accounts that exist. They helped the children to understand the importance of a pension and how this works when you’re older. The children  were very excited to learn about the £5 challenge that would be taking place next year. The children are given a loan of £5 and allowed to be an entrepreneur and raise as much money as possible for the school. I wonder who will be the next Alan Sugar!

Potion Commotion

Posted on Friday 27 October 2023 by Reception team

Potion Commotion

We’ve been reading Potion Commotion by Peter Bently and Sernur Isik.

We’ve been writing our own potion recipes and making potions in the water tray. We even thought of some magic words we could use.

“Potion commotion, make this bubble!”- Rupert

“abracadabra!”- Harry

We’ve enjoyed themed activities, with a focus on developing important skills.

-Exploring autumn colour, texture and scent (cinnamon sticks) in the sensory area. -Tweezing spiders out of a web and hammering golf tees into a pumpkin to strengthen our fine motor skills. -Printing pumpkins, using apples from our garden, to explore an artistic technique. -Tweezing pompoms into cauldrons for fine motor and number recognition.

Maths; number stories

In Maths, we’ve been learning to use number to describe what we see.

We progressed this skill further by telling number stories.

“First there were 2 ghosts in front of the house, then 1 more flew in, now there are 3 ghosts altogether”

Ask your child to tell you the number story below.

In provision, we’ve been representing numbers on ten frames.

Halloween disco and special lunch

Everyone had lots of fun at the Halloween disco last week.

Yesterday, the lunchtime staff treated the children to spooky decorations and a special dessert.

Phonics

Autumn 1 week 8 has been a revision week.

In provision, we’ve been playing ‘tricky word BOO’ to revise the tricky words we know.

Poetry Picnic

Each week we will be learning a new poem. We will recite this poem each day. By saying the poem out loud, we can focus on the sounds and rhythm of each word or line. We talk to the children about how this can help us become better readers. This week’s poem is called Pointy Hat

We talk about how a poem sometimes has rhyming words and sometimes doesn’t. We also talk about how a poem can have a fast rhythm or a slow rhythm.

Click below to watch Reception recite this week’s poem!

Help at home; light and dark

If you go to any light shows, see any illuminations or go to a firework display over the half term break, we’d love to share your photos in class. We’ll use the pictures to support our topic on light and dark.

Halloween disco

We had a fantastic time at the EYFS/ KS1 disco on Friday. There were lots of spooky characters about who had a brilliant time showing off their dance moves! Here are some photos of 2C (before the disco began!)

Junior Leadership Team

Posted on Sunday 22 October 2023 by Mrs Hogarth

Last week saw that time of year again where we say goodbye to the current JLT members and we elect new ones. This year, the team have been great and these will be tough shoes to fill. On Wednesday, each class listened to speeches from the children wishing to be elected. There were some great speeches that allowed the children to express their strengths and their wishes should they be elected. Thursday saw a nail-biting day of voting!

In assembly on Friday, the new team was announced and the new members received their JLT badges.

The new team are:

5,6A – Emilia

5,6B Noah

5,6C Eric

3,4A Thea

3,4B – Caleb

3,4C – Lani

Spooktastic Halloween Disco

Posted on Friday 20 October 2023 by Mrs Latham

The FOSP Halloween disco was a hit with the children tonight (especially the sweets and juice at the end).

If you offer any support, big or small, to the Friends of Scholes Primary group, please contact the school office.

Harvest time

Posted on Friday 20 October 2023 by Reception Team

We’ve been harvesting some our Nursery vegetables this week including carrots and radishes. Children loved pulling up the carrots and comparing them with a friend to see which was the longest. After we’d washed and peeled the carrots, we enjoyed eating them at snack time. They were really crunchy!

In the maths area, we read a story about a giant carrot and sorted a selection of carrots and potatoes by size. There was lots of discussion about big, little, medium sized, tiny, giant, long and short – lots of size related vocabulary!

Help at home: Have a go at sorting a selection of objects together. Can you sort them by type, size or colour? Ask your child to explain how they have sorted them and why. This could be a selection of cars that are sorted by colour or perhaps some fruit sorted into groups of the same type. Can they find a car/fruit the same as yours? How is it the same? How is it different?

In the creative area, children had great fun rolling conkers through the paint and around the tub to create patterns (whilst also strengthening and developing their upper body and arm muscles).

And a few other snap shots of our learning this week…
