2C money, money, money
This week is money week at Scholes Primary School, so we thought that we would take the opportunity to learn about money and it’s value in Maths. In 2C we have learnt to recognise coins and their value. We have also been practising making the same amount using different coins.
We know that the only coins to exist are 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2. We are careful not to confuse our number bonds with money and make sure we only use the coins that exist, in our calculations.
See what we’ve been getting up to in our Maths lessons this week!

Living & Learning: budgets and banks
We have been very fortunate to have several visitors this week to discuss money matters in year 56: Virgin Money representatives, Wetherby Food Bank and also Mrs Quirk (Sphere Federation Business Manager).
Mrs Quirk talked about how taxes help to fund our school and showed children a breakdown of how we spend our money. Children were shocked at how much money is spent of toilet rolls each year!
Children have learned about the difference between a credit and debit card. They have discussed the advantges and disadvantages of each.
They have also learned about what tax is and why it is so important.
At home, discuss some of the major expenses your household has to pay for each month. Discuss the benefits of using a bank account and what our taxes are used for.
Living and learning : coin trail
We’re going to make a ‘coin trail’ on Friday using 1p and 2p coins. If you can send any into school to help with this, donations will be counted and sent to Cancer Research (our current school charity).
We’re hoping to spell out SCHOLES in coins!
Living and learning : Me and my money (themed week)
We have been talking all about money in our classes this week.
Where does money come from?
How do we keep it safe?
How can you earn money?
What is the difference between needs and wants?
When can we spend or save?
This book was useful in our discussions.
We have also been identifying, sorting and counting money in our maths lessons.
This game on the Top Marks website is great for learning about money.
Living and learning – money week
As part of our themed money week, we enjoyed a visit from some representatives from a bank. The session was full of information about how a bank can help you. They explained how savings accounts work and the other types of accounts that exist. They helped the children to understand the importance of a pension and how this works when you’re older. The children were very excited to learn about the £5 challenge that would be taking place next year. The children are given a loan of £5 and allowed to be an entrepreneur and raise as much money as possible for the school. I wonder who will be the next Alan Sugar!
Potion Commotion
Potion Commotion
We’ve been reading Potion Commotion by Peter Bently and Sernur Isik.
We’ve been writing our own potion recipes and making potions in the water tray. We even thought of some magic words we could use.
“Potion commotion, make this bubble!”- Rupert
“abracadabra!”- Harry
We’ve enjoyed themed activities, with a focus on developing important skills.

Maths; number stories
In Maths, we’ve been learning to use number to describe what we see.
We progressed this skill further by telling number stories.
“First there were 2 ghosts in front of the house, then 1 more flew in, now there are 3 ghosts altogether”
Ask your child to tell you the number story below.
In provision, we’ve been representing numbers on ten frames.
Halloween disco and special lunch
Everyone had lots of fun at the Halloween disco last week.
Yesterday, the lunchtime staff treated the children to spooky decorations and a special dessert.
Phonics
Autumn 1 week 8 has been a revision week.
In provision, we’ve been playing ‘tricky word BOO’ to revise the tricky words we know.
Poetry Picnic
Each week we will be learning a new poem. We will recite this poem each day. By saying the poem out loud, we can focus on the sounds and rhythm of each word or line. We talk to the children about how this can help us become better readers. This week’s poem is called Pointy Hat
We talk about how a poem sometimes has rhyming words and sometimes doesn’t. We also talk about how a poem can have a fast rhythm or a slow rhythm.
Click below to watch Reception recite this week’s poem!
Help at home; light and dark
If you go to any light shows, see any illuminations or go to a firework display over the half term break, we’d love to share your photos in class. We’ll use the pictures to support our topic on light and dark.

Junior Leadership Team
Last week saw that time of year again where we say goodbye to the current JLT members and we elect new ones. This year, the team have been great and these will be tough shoes to fill. On Wednesday, each class listened to speeches from the children wishing to be elected. There were some great speeches that allowed the children to express their strengths and their wishes should they be elected. Thursday saw a nail-biting day of voting!
In assembly on Friday, the new team was announced and the new members received their JLT badges.
The new team are:
