Phonics

Posted on Friday 18 October 2019 by Reception team

Over the last few weeks, we have introduced children to some letter sounds. So far, we have learnt   Ss   Aa   Tt  Pp  Ii  Nn  Mm  Dd  Oo Gg and Cc. You can watch and sing along to the jolly phonics videos at home.

The children have enjoyed…

  • matching objects to their initial sounds e.g. n – net,

  • and segmenting and blending CVC words.

Challenge – 3 bricks

Can your child practise their letter formation at home? Can your child tell you the initial sounds of a selection of objects? Can your child segment and blend the sounds in the words below?

cat      dog     cot    mat    tap

Please email any pictures/quotes from your child. This will support us in our assessment by providing evidence towards the Moving and Handling and Reading strands of the EYFS.

Children begin to form recognisable letters. Children hear the initial sounds in words. Children begin to segment and blend CVC words.

Harvest assembly

We were amazed at how much food and toiletries we managed to collect for St George’s Crypt. Thank you for your contribution.

What are these bricks my child keeps talking about?

Posted on Friday 11 October 2019 by Reception team

This week, we’ve introduced your child to challenges. Challenging activities are around the classroom for your child to complete to earn a brick. The aim is to get a tower of bricks taller than five. Challenges include the learning we’re focusing on throughout the week – for example, writing our name. Ask your child what challenges they’ve done this week.

We talked about who had more and who had fewer bricks. If your child’s tower was more than five, your child will come home with a certificate!

Junk Modelling Request

Posted on Thursday 03 October 2019 by Reception team

The children love to make models out of recyclable materials. It’s a great opportunity for them to be creative and use their imagination.

Please can you collect and bring in any recyclable materials for our junk modelling area.

Library

Posted on Thursday 03 October 2019 by Reception team

The children have enjoyed their second visit to the school library this week.  Please bring your child’s library book back to school on a Wednesday, as this is when we change them.

During the session the children use their quiet library voices and take their time to choose a book. While we are waiting for everyone to choose a story we encourage the children to sit and share their stories. Before we leave we like to sit as a class and listen to a story together. The children enjoy visiting the library and look forward to it each week.

A mysterious carrot…

Posted on Wednesday 02 October 2019 by Reception team

The children found a funny shaped carrot growing in the garden. We talked about what the carrot might be and why it was growing in our garden. Some children decided it was an alien carrot. The children then began telling a story about the alien carrot being chased by farm animals trying to eat him! We decided to take photos of the events to make our own story. The children then used the pictures to re-tell their own story to their friends.

Can your child use the pictures to tell their own carrot story? Bring it in to school to share with friends!

Parent Partnership Emails

Posted on Friday 27 September 2019 by Reception team

The children have had another lovely week in F2. They are getting to know the routines and form friendships with each other.

We have had some lovely emails and pictures following on from the parent partnership evening. The children have enjoyed sharing these during snack time and other carpet time sessions. These emails are a lovely way to encourage your child to speak about their life outside of school and also form a crucial part of our assessments. Below are a few of the examples that we have shared this week.

Whilst walking to school this morning they took it upon themselves to take a hand each of their baby brothers to help them walk.  Both boys were careful they didn’t go to fast for their brother’s and gave them words of encouragement as they went along.

In the paddling pool:
“What if I throw this ball to you?” She threw the ball to him and he followed, “Shall we do it again? Thank you”
“Your go”

This week at Cricket he won an award. He queues up to allow others to take a turn and the coach said his throws were very accurate and he follow instructions well listening to 3 different command.

He has been camping with his dad for a night for the first time this weekend. He helped put the tent up, helped cook the food, and they went in the kayak on the river. He was scared of the flame stove used to cook and said to his dad “Daddy I don’t like fire but thanks for saving me”. He had his head torch for when it got dark .

We also love to hear about any wow moments your child may have had. Below is a lovely example:

“… surprised me with his thinking the other day. He was on his scooter on the way home from school and said “Mummy, why hasn’t my scooter got a bell”… I suggested if he wanted one he could use the money in his money box, he responded “until Oliver is big enough to use my balance bike, could we use the bell off there?” I was very impressed with this idea of reusing and saving money, and also him accepting that his balance bike and bell will be Oliver’s one day!

Please fill out a time to talk this weekend ready to share on Monday. Also please tell us about any WOW moments your child has.

Parent Partnership Information

Posted on Wednesday 18 September 2019 by Reception team

Thank you to those who came to the parental partnership evening. We hope you found the evening informative and have lots of ideas on how to support your child at home.

We value the importance of working together with you to gain a holistic view of your child’s learning. You can share your child’s learning moments with us by email (scholesf2@spherefederation.org), wow documents and time to talk sheets. These sheets can also be found on the parental partnership board in your child’s classroom for you to take. In rainbow class, the parental partnership board is on the right as you enter the classroom. In sunshine class, the board is next to your child’s learning journey profiles as you enter the classroom. Please feel free to look at your child’s profiles – you will find observations and pictures of your child learning at school. This might prompt discussions about things your child is doing at home and allow us to gain a bigger picture of your child’s learning and development. We often find play is linked to things that have happened at home – it would be great to hear about these moments!

Parent partnership meeting – Wednesday 18 September

Posted on Monday 16 September 2019 by Reception team

A reminder that we have a parent partnership meeting this Wednesday 18 September at 6pm. We value the role you play in your child’s learning journey. The parent partnership meeting will be an opportunity to understand how you can help us build a bigger picture of your child’s learning and development.

We have already had some emails with pictures from parents about their child’s learning at home. For example, one child has been learning to play the keyboard. Another, has been learning to rock climb. Thank you to those parents who have shared their child’s learning – it has been fantastic to hear about! It helps us gain a bigger picture of your child’s interests and development. We allow time for the child to share these pictures with friends and talk about their news. This is a great opportunity for your child to build confidence in front of a class and develop their speaking and listening skills. If you would like to email any news about your child’s learning please do so to scholesf2@spherefederation.org .
