Practical maths
We use concrete objects and equipment whenever possible to ensure children can see numbers and maths concepts. This is based on the CPA approach (concrete, pictorial, abstract) for maths mastery.
Year 2 and Year 6 assessments
The STA has published an information leaflet and two videos for parents/carers of children in Year 2 and Year 6 about national curriculum assessments. The purpose of these materials is to help you understand more about the end of key stage assessments that will be administered in primary schools in May. (The end of Key Stage 1 is Year 2; the end of Key Stage 2 is Year 6.)
The materials provide basic information about the purpose and format of the tests, how parents can best support their children and how results will be reported.
Living and Learning – I Can Recognise My Talents
Our Living and Learning statement this week is I recognise my talents. We’ve talked about what a talent is and shared our own with the class. The children enjoyed showing their talents during a mini talent show.
‘My talent is drawing.’
‘My talent is dancing.’
‘My talent is dancing.’
‘My talent is playing games.’
‘My talent is phonics.’
Outdoor learning
All year 1 and 2 classes were excited to take a look at the newly renovated pond and wildlife area. We believe there are many benefits from taking learning outside and the English Outdoor Council agree, stating that exposure to the natural environment is beneficial to human health by ‘enhancing personal and social communication skills, increasing physical health, enhancing mental and spiritual health and enhancing spiritual, sensory, and aesthetic awareness.’
We counted flies, trees, daffodils and other natural features to learn how to make tally charts and count in fives.
You can help at home by counting things around your house or garden and record the results using a tally chart.
114,530 skips at Scholes School today!
As part of our efforts to raise money for Sport Relief and our school charity, The Donkey Sanctuary, we aimed to complete 50,000 skips collectively today. We smashed our target and completed 114,530! We also enjoyed watching our Year 4 skipping team rehearse for the skipping competition in May.
Kylie Minogue at Scholes School…!
Well, not quite. We enjoyed measuring our height today and found out Miss Parling is the same size as Kylie. The children were pondering the question ‘Do taller people have bigger feet?’ in our Science lessons today. We measured our height and the length of our feet and decided that, generally, taller children had bigger feet. It was also an opportunity to continue our Living and Learning (body image) discussions about how we’re all unique, special and equal, no matter what our bodies look like.
Can anyone help us walking to the library?
We need helpers to walk with us to Scholes Library. Please let your child’s class teacher know if you can spare half an hour to help us.

Thank you.
Outdoor PE
Children have enjoyed outdoor PE lessons this week. We’ve been particularly working on skipping skills. Please could you ensure your child has some blue/black tracksuit bottoms to wear (bare legs can get a bit chilly) and suitable shoes for outdoor PE (trainers, pumps or well-fitted school shoes are fine – not boots). If you’ve any trainers that your child has grown out of and would like to donate them to school for our spares box, we would be most grateful.
Living and Learning – Body Image
We’ve been thinking about body image for the last few weeks. We read the The Ugly Five by Julia Donaldson a few weeks ago and have referred back to it when discussing this topic. The sentiment of the story is to not judge others on their looks. This is such an important message for our children. We encourage them to treat everyone the same, regardless of looks, age, disability, gender, race, religion or belief.
We’ve also been reading The Mixed Up Chameleon by Eric Carle. It prompted lots of discussion about how important it is to value yourself and your own qualities and traits.
