Creative Curriculum – toasting marshmallows on a camp fire!
To round off our Time Travel topic in style, we had a camp fire this afternoon! When we were learning about how people lived in the Stone Age, we found out that they cooked on a fire. Although we weren’t eating reindeer or wild boar that we had caught, toasting marshmallows (or pieces of bread if you didn’t like marshmallows), gave us the feel of what it might’ve been like!
We also talked about how toasting marshmallows was a scientific experiment – demonstrating irreversible changes.
Perhaps the most important part though, were our safeguarding discussions about fire safety, what to do in a fire drill and how to stay safe near fire.
A big THANK YOU to Andy Webb (AW2 Developments) who made the amazing outdoor benches we are sitting on too!
Also, thank you to everyone who sent in marshmallows and skewers.
Living and Learning-Anti-Bullying Week
We kicked off Anti-Bullying Week by wearing odd socks. Proudly we displayed our odd socks and thought about how we are ‘odd’. Through doing this, we celebrated how we are all unique and that there isn’t anyone the same. We have our own thoughts, looks, likes and dislikes etc.
We sang along to the ‘Andy and the Odd Socks’ song ‘Choose Respect’. Have a listen and join in: The Odd Socks.
The Anti-Bullying Alliance’s overall theme this year is about respect. We used their video as a stimulus for discussion, drama and poster making. Anti-Bullying Alliance Promo Video 2018.
Most children in KS1 will be able to tell you about STOP. It helps us to define what bullying is; when something happens Several Times On Purpose. It also reminds us to act if we find that we are subjected to bullying; Start Telling Other People. The importance of STOP is continually taught throughout the year, to all children, but we have enjoyed a special week of focusing on it.
Ball fun – physical activity
We love being physically active in key stage 1, ensuring we get at least 30 active minutes every day. The new ball chute on our playground will make this even easier! The children loved trying it out on Friday in PE and also at playtime and lunchtime.
Fierce, eccentric, exhausted – Adjective Day!
Fierce, eccentric, exhausted – that’s just the teachers! Wow, what a day.
SATs information evening
Thank you to everyone who came to the SATs information evening for year 2 parents. We hope you found it informative and useful. The presentation and information leaflet is here.
We will remember them – Remembrance Day 2018
The children listened to poems and stories, then talked about Remembrance Day this week at school. They made poppies and some wrote messages to the soldiers.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Laurence Binyon
Thank you to Mrs Thorne for her artistic input and Peter Smith, from Lyndhurst View, who made the central piece.
Brilliant Balancing
1K have enjoyed challenging themselves to balance in different ways.
It was tricky on one leg.
I can balance on this foot really well.
Number bonds
We’ve been working really hard learning and using number bonds of 10 (Year 2s – bonds of 20 and 100, too) recently. Following the CPA approach of mastery maths, we use concrete apparatus, visual representations and abstract number sentences to help us to learn them. Help at home by having a go at playing Hit the Button – great for number bond rapid recall. Check out the Learn More/Calculations section on our website, too.
F2 and Y1 Maths Information Evening
Thank you to all the parents and carers who came to the maths information evening. We hope you found it useful and informative. The presentation and information leaflets can be found below.
Living and Learning- Democracy
As part of our ongoing work on British values, we have been focusing on democracy. We set up a polling station in the hall and children voted for their new School Councillors. All children had the opportunity to be a candidate. It was an inspiring time, listening to the speeches that children had prepared as part of their homework. Well done to the newly voted Councillors. We are looking forward to the pupils’ voice being put into action.
