Living and Learning – I cope with change
Friday 13 July
Yesterday, our children all met their new teachers for September. They had a full morning of activities with their new class and came back buzzing with enthusiasm.
Today, during our Living and Learning circle time, we talked about the emotions we felt and how we could deal with them, ranging from worry and frustration to excitement and relief. The children were quick to acknowledge that they experienced a whole range of emotions as it was hard to identify just one.
The children could talk openly about their feelings and are very much looking forward to the change in September.
Debate- Should footballers be role models?
Today in 3/4N, during our reading session, we debated: Should footballers be considered role models? After reading information provided by FirstNews , the children were ready with arguments for and against. During the debate, all the children respectfully listened to the opposite side, used information to inform their viewpoints and put forward logical viewpoints.
It’s coming home!!
We kicked off our World Cup mini topic this morning by looking at the Three Lions song. The children used their reading skills to answer a retrieval, an interpret and an authors choice question about the song. This then sparked a discussion about why we say ‘It’s coming home.’ What does it mean? Discuss with your child what they found out during today’s discussion.

Living and Learning – Being Healthy!
Wednesday 4 July
Today, our Y3/4 children researched, designed and created a healthy snack as part of our Being Healthy week. They tasted a selection of salad vegetables and put them into a wholemeal pitta pocket-yummy!
Keepy Uppy production
Today, we enjoyed a performance of Keep Uppy, presented by Tutti Frutti productions. The play told the story of a boy, Joey, who worshipped football. He dreamed about it, talked about it and played it whenever he could. The show ignited children imaginations with the use of music, dance and visual effects. It made children think about their own passions and ambitions.
Celebration assembly!
Congratulations to the children whose effort and achievements have stood out this week. It’s been particularly impressive to maintain such focus on their learning in such high temperatures! In addition, we celebrated the Y5, who triumphed in the Brownlee Triathlon hosted by John Smeaton School. Well done everyone!
Living and Learning – Being different!
In Living and Learning this week, we have been looking at ways to identify positive things about ourselves and to challenge stereotyping.
We discussed the meaning of the word ‘stereotyping’ (A fixed idea about a group of people that says that everyone who is part of that group is the same. A stereotype is an idea that limits what people can do, be or experience. Stereotypes don’t celebrate difference.
Stereotypes upset people by telling them that they can’t be who they are.)
Interestingly, the children were asked to draw pictures of a scientist, a doctor and a ballet dancer – with some surprising results.
The focus of the discussion ended on the issues of gender by inviting the class to consider whether girls and boys are good at the same things.
