Walk to School Week 21-25 May 2018

Posted on Wednesday 23 May 2018 by Mrs Latham

Lots of children have been walking to school this week. The raffle box is getting full. The draw will be made on Friday 25th May (lots of lovely prizes to choose from) so remember to bring your tickets to school so they go in the box. Thank you to The Buffers for allowing us to use their car park so children can walk at least 0.5km to school, even if they live further away!

Super string telephones!

Posted on Friday 18 May 2018 by Mr Roundtree

This week, we made string telephones to help us understand that sound travels in a series of vibrations.

We used paper cups and some string, but our investigation would work with empty yoghurt pots if you’d like to try this at home.

Here are a few photos of our successes:

The children are loving learning about sound!

Walk to School Week 21-25 May 2018

Posted on Thursday 17 May 2018 by Mrs Latham

Next week, 21 – 25 May, is Walk to School Week. Today, each child was given a leaflet and raffle tickets. For each day that your child walks to school, they’ll be able to put a raffle ticket into the box in the school office. Tickets will be drawn and prizes will be won! For those that live too far away to walk the full distance, The Buffers have agreed to let parents/carers park in their car park, so children still have the chance to enter the prize draw (scooting or riding a bike also counts). There are spare leaflets in the school office.

Sound around us!

Posted on Monday 14 May 2018 by Mr Roundtree

Our new topic, Sound, has kicked off with a sound survey walk around school this afternoon. We predicted that our Nursery area would be the noisiest and the field would be the quietest. But, after our sound walk we discovered that Nursery was one of the quietest areas in school!

We are learning that vibrations make sounds.

The children discussed the most important sounds that we hear and and prioritised them using a Diamond 9 grid.  Many children said that fire alarms and sirens were the most important sounds. Parent voices and teacher instructions were thankfully not too far down the list!

3,4N PE

This week, 3,4N have been working in groups and using equipment to create their own games with rules. They then had to teach their game to another group. They worked on problem solving, group work and used the skills they’ve developed over the year.

Tour de Yorkshire in Scholes

Posted on Monday 07 May 2018 by Mrs Latham

We enjoyed the excitement of the Tour de Yorkshire coming through Scholes on Friday. Each class decorated a bike to display and the whole school went outside to watch the women’s race speed past.  We did some WuSu (Wake up, Shake up) dances while we were waiting and the Year 4 skipping team showed us their skipping dance from the skipping competition, too. It was a day to remember for sure!

Living and Learning – Mental health and wellbeing

Posted on Friday 04 May 2018 by Mr Roundtree

Across Year 3/4 classes, we have been learning about how to deal with difficult feelings and emotions.

Our activity today was to role play a time when people might give put-downs (a negative remark about about a person, sometimes said as a joke). We explored ways of how to deal with these situations by giving ourselves a ‘put-up’.

Skipping Festival

A massive well done to the year 4s who took part in the skipping festival on Wednesday! Not only did they perform amazingly, they represented our school with pride; showing resilience and great teamwork.

Eureka

Posted on Thursday 03 May 2018 by Mrs Lake

Today, Year 3 and 4 enjoyed a trip to Eureka. The main focus of our trip was to kick-start our mini-topic sound and hearing, starting next week. As well as looking at how an ear works and listening to different sounds in the sound garden, we also had time to learn more about our bodies and role play in the garage, house and bank.

We made the most of the lovely weather and ate our lunch outside. The children enjoyed playing in the gardens too.

Living and Learning – Recognising Emotions

Posted on Saturday 28 April 2018 by Mrs Lake

This week, Year 3/4  have been recognising emotions in themselves and in others. The children watched a short video clip  where they were asked to recognise a character’s feelings from his facial expression and body language. The children have also discussed how different situations can affect the way someone is feeling.  Being aware of different emotions – both positive and negative – is an important basis for good mental health.
