Times tables

This week, we would like the children to recap on their times tables.

In Y3, we are going back to our 3 x table only. Use the times tables sheets provided. For extra practice online, choose hit-the-button or times tables sheets on our website.

In Y4, learn all the tables learnt so far this year. We have provided a missing number square grid for challenge.

This week, the whole school has the same Creative homework: I can show what I know about a particular job.

This homework is in preparation for our themed week which is next week. Throughout the week, we’ll focus on money. One aspect of this is how money is earned. Obviously, our children are a little young to be earning money but it is really important that they have aspirations.

For their homework this week, children should decide on a job (maybe one they want to do or one that a family member has) and find out some useful information about the profession: what a ‘normal’ day looks like, how much you can earn, what qualifications/experience you need, etc.

Children could respond to this creative homework in a range of ways:

  • Create a poster
  • Make a ‘project board’
  • Re-create a ‘day in the life of…’ and document this in pictures
  • Make a presentation
  • Compare a few different jobs
  • Devise a short play to show their peers what the job involves
  • Research the salary and decide how they might spend their money
  • Write a job application

Of course, there are many other ways in which children could respond. Children should be ready to celebrate their learning as part of their homework review by Thursday 23 May 2019.

This week’s homework is Creative and due on Thursday 16th May 2019.

As part of our new topic, Disasters and the Environment, we would like your child to find out about a global or local disaster. This can be natural or man-made. It may also be a personal disaster that may have affected them .

Children can present  findings in the most creative way they can.  They may decide to choose one of the following or come up with something completely different. Be creative!

  • Poster
  • Newspaper report
  • Pictures or drawings
  • Interview
  • Comic strip
  • Story
  • …or any other creative way your child may think of!

Times tables:

Complete the table division wheels. Division is the inverse of multiplication so use your times table facts to help you.

Copies will be stuck in books or can be found here.

Living and Learning – I know mental health is important

Posted on Saturday 04 May 2019 by Mr Roundtree

Our Living and Learning statement this week was about Mental Health. We talked about how we can see injuries and bruises on the outside (like a broken leg) and so we ask if the person is ok, but with mental health, the bruises can be on the inside so it’s not as easy to see.
We used the illustration of two bananas, both looking the same on the outside, but one was all squishy on the inside – that’s like our mental health. But unlike bananas, the bruises on the inside can heal, just like the external ones, if we talk and get help.
Quotes from the children about what they do when they feel down:
Poppy: “I read a book to help me calm down.”
Jessica: “I hold my breath as long as possible and then breathe out all the anger.”
Paige: “I stroke Granny’s dog.”
Alex: “I listen to my favourite songs.”
Lily: “I put headphones on and listen to calm music.”
Here are some photos of just some of many fantastic, creative homework from our children this week.

This week’s homework is Talk Time and due on Thursday 9th May 2019.

We have been discussing the importance of online safety and creating safe, secure passwords and usernames. We have also talked about different online scenarios, how the children could respond to them and how to get help if they are worried about an issue.

For homework this week, could your child discuss the following questions that link to a moral issue:

Why do we need to keep our passwords secret?

Is it right to keep a secret?

Times tables – Use maths frame MTC website for more practise.

Look at the times tables you have been learning in your year group. Write your own personalised list of the tables you still need to practise.

Do you know the divisions?

Year 3 times tables – 3, 4 and 8 times tables (up to x 12).

Year 4 times tables –  6, 7 and 9 times tables (up to x 12).

This week, our homework is Talk Time: Should the government buy every adult or every child a bike?

Children should discuss this idea with an adult at home and be ready to share their views by Thursday 09 May 2019.

Spelling

Like last week, children have taken ownership for their own spellings. Each child has been given a copy of the year 5 and 6 statutory spelling list from the National Curriculum. They have identified 10 spellings that they need to learn or revise. Children should learn these spellings in preparation for a spelling test on Friday 10 May 2019.

Times tables

This week, children should revise the 4 and 8 x tables, including the related facts. Children will be tested on a random selection of these on Friday 10 May 2019.

You could:

  • discuss some ‘house rules’ around screen time
  • talk about how to increase family times without screens

This week, the whole school has the same Creative homework: I can illustrate different emotions.

This homework, which links to our living and learning statement, is an opportunity for children to show that they can recognise, and show, different emotions. As humans, we display a huge-range of emotions. Sometimes, it’s obvious how we’re feeling. Sometimes, it’s trickier for us to show, or recognise, an emotion. This statement allows us to spend time thinking about the different emotions we experience and how we can recognise these accurately in ourselves and others.

Children could respond creatively to this in a range of ways:

  • create a piece of art that shows a range of emotions
  • take pictures of themselves (or others) displaying different emotions
  • write a short-story in which a character shows lots of emotions
  • Devise a poem, song or rap about emotions
  • Create a comic strip to illustrate different emotions

Of course, there are many other ways in which children could respond. Children should be ready to celebrate their learning as part of their homework review by Thursday 02 May 2019.
