114,530 skips at Scholes School today!

Posted on Friday 23 March 2018 by Mrs Latham

As part of our efforts to raise money for Sport Relief and our school charity, The Donkey Sanctuary, we aimed to complete 50,000 skips collectively today. We smashed our target and completed 114,530! We also enjoyed watching our Year 4 skipping team rehearse for the skipping competition in May.

Library visit – we need you!

Posted on Thursday 22 March 2018 by Reception team

We’re hoping to visit Scholes Library on Tuesday 27 March. However, we need your help to be able to visit.

Are you available on Tuesday 27 March at 1.00pm-2.30pm?

If so, please speak to your child’s class teacher about volunteering to help take Foundation to Scholes Library.

Special hatching visitors!

Posted on Thursday 22 March 2018 by Reception team

Wow! We have had a very exciting few days. Yesterday, we watched chicks hatching!

Foundation have been very patient waiting 21 days for the chicks to hatch in the incubator.

We have 4 chicks. The children have written their ideas for the names and we’ll decide as a class soon. Today, we talked about the life cycle of a hen and how to care for our chicks. Can your child tell you what we talked about for 2 challenge bricks? Please send us an email with your child’s response.

We also let the chicks run around on the carpet in front of us – it was very exciting! Tomorrow, we’re looking forward to holding the chicks.

Encouraging independence

Posted on Wednesday 21 March 2018 by Reception team

  • The children enjoy self-registering and choosing an area to go to.

  • They like to choose their lunch – the pictures are really useful to support them in making their choice.

  • They enjoy reading and answering the morning question.

We’re so proud to see your child coming into school confidently, happily and independently!

We’ve been talking to the children about the word ‘independence’. We have noticed that the children are now showing a lot more independence within the classroom environment.

To begin to get your child ready for Year 1, we’d like your support in  encouraging your child to come into school and do their morning jobs by themselves. Our aim is to further develop your child’s confidence and encourage your child to come into school independently in the Summer term.

Science Week

Posted on Monday 19 March 2018 by Reception team

Last week was Science week and we had lots of visits from a special scientist – Professor Myers (Mrs Myers’ twin sister!).

The children enjoyed making predictions (a sensible guess) and then observing the experiments to see if they were right. We were able to observe the effects of some experiments immediately and for others we had to be patient and wait a few days.

We made a raw egg bounce.

We observed daffodils change colour.

We blew up a balloon by mixing bicarbonate soda with vinegar.

We made lava come out of a bottle and looked at the density of different liquids (honey, oil and water).

Challenge time…

  • Can your child tell you which was their favourite experiment from Science week?
  • Can they draw a picture and label it or write a sentence about the experiment?

Here are some excellent examples of children’s writing about Science week.

Please bring in or email your child’s comments/drawing/writing to share with the class. This challenge is worth 3 challenge cubes.

Spare clothes needed!

Posted on Sunday 18 March 2018 by Reception team

We’re in desperate need of spare school clothes in F2. If you have any spare school clothes – trousers, skirts, tights, leggings, t-shirts, jumpers or cardigans – that your child has now out-grown, we’d greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Rainbow Factory Volunteers

Posted on Tuesday 13 March 2018 by Reception team

To support us on our trip to the Rainbow factory on Wednesday 18 April, we’d like five parent volunteers. If you’re able to come along and help us on the trip, then please let a member of the F2 team know.

Thanks.

Mimika Theatre

Posted on Thursday 08 March 2018 by Reception team

This week, some children had the chance to watch the Mimika theatre company present ‘Landscapes’ within a white, domed-shaped tent. The performance explored the diversity and complexity of the natural world.

‘Landscapes’ uses a variety of techniques including puppetry, an image based story line, an immersive stereo soundtrack and a variety of sensory events and visual effects to involve and engage the audience.

Before the performance began, the children were introduced to two of the puppets (the snake and the crocodile).

Then we took a seat inside the dome…we were all very excited!

We watched in wonder as a story unfolded through four different landscapes (desert, rainforest, sea and the Antarctic).

People who help us…nurse visit!

Posted on Thursday 08 March 2018 by Reception team

This week we had some special visitors in F2.

As part of our ‘people who help us’ topic, Ruth and Sarah (a hospital nurse and a community nurse) came to visit us. They spoke to the children about how they care for people at home and in hospital.

They asked the children what the role of a nurse is?

  • “Put plasters on.”
  • “Might do an x-ray if somebody get hurt on their bone.”
  • “Help you get healthy.”

They brought some of their equipment (stethoscope, bandages, heartbeat monitor) to show the children. They showed the children a stethoscope and explained how they use it to listen to a person’s heartbeat and their breathing. They modelled how to dress a wound using a bandage. The children talked about their experiences of bandages:

  • “If your hand is bleeding you need to put it on your hand.”
  • “One day when I was riding on my bike I fell off and daddy put one on my hand.”
  • “I hurt my elbow and had it all up my arm.”

We’d like to say a big thank you to Ruth and Sarah for coming in to see us. We’d love to have more visitors to talk about their job and how they help others. Please speak to a member of the F2 team if you are interested.

Play dough!

Posted on Friday 02 March 2018 by Reception team

The children are really enjoying the self-serve play dough area where they can follow a recipe and make their own play dough! A few children have asked to take their play dough home so here is a recipe if you’d like to make it at home:

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 2 cups flour
  • food colouring

Method

Mix together the ingredients – simple!

Play dough is a fantastic way to support your child’s fine motor skill development and also for imaginative play.
