Living and learning : assessing risk

Posted on Friday 04 February 2022 by Mrs Latham

This week, we have been discussing risks in our living and learning lessons. We put different activities on a ‘risk ladder’, deciding whether it was high or low risk. We decided that it depends on other factors too – and what you do to minimise risk. For example, climbing the stairs would become higher risk if you ran or went up carrying lots of toys. Help at home : talk to your child about where they put the activities on the risk ladder.

Multiple representations in maths

Posted on Friday 28 January 2022 by Mrs Latham

We use a variety of representations in maths : part whole models, bar models, pictures, number lines, counters and ten frames. They help us to understand the relationships between numbers and represent real life number stories.

Help at home by talking about number stories and how they translate into calculations.

Living and learning : Identity

Posted on Saturday 22 January 2022 by Mrs Latham

We have being talking about what makes us, us. We wore something today that expressed something that makes up part of our identity. We had gymnasts, ballet dancers, footballers, martial artists, animal lovers and so much more! All of these things make us who we are.

Odd and even numbers

Posted on Wednesday 19 January 2022 by Mrs Latham

Understanding odd and even numbers is maths knowledge that underpins many others – place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Knowing what makes an odd or even numbers and being able to identify them is very important and takes time to learn. We often chant the odd or even numbers or sing songs to help us learn them. We have also sorted numbers and representations of numbers into odd or even.

Help at home by talking about odd and even. Is your family an odd or even number? What about your house number or the number of steps to go upstairs? Count cutlery in 2s – odd or even?

Let’s get swimming!

Posted on Thursday 13 January 2022 by Mrs Latham

We have finally had children from Reception and Key Stage 1 swimming in our own pool! Two teaching assistants are now trained swimming instructors and each class has had their first lesson this week. There were some nervous children but also lots of excitement.

I loved going with my class.

I have never been swimming but I liked it.

I can already swim but liked going and being active with my friends.

Living and learning : rights and responsibilities

Posted on Thursday 13 January 2022 by Mrs Latham

This week’s living and learning lessons we have been talking about rights and the responsibilities that come with them.

Encouraging children to be responsible and increase their independence is a important (our swimming lessons will help us with this).

We matched some rights with the responsibilities that go with them.

Phonics and early reading – eBooks

Posted on Wednesday 12 January 2022 by Mrs Latham

We hope you all received your usernames and passwords for Collins eBooks (some year 2s do not need them).

These match the phonics books we are reading in school three times a week. We use our phonics skills while reading books.

There is more information on the Little Wandle website about these reading practice sessions.

Reading an eBook at home is a change for children but most people are embracing it and continuing to enjoy the physical ‘sharing book’ which is to be read together and enjoyed.

If you have any problems accessing them, please contact your child’s class teacher.

Living and Learning : I know when to interrupt (and when not to).

Posted on Thursday 06 January 2022 by Mrs Latham

We have talked at length about this!

Young children often feel the need to tell adults immediately something that is in their thoughts. Sometimes this can be at an inappropriate moment. We discussed different scenarios and when it is okay and when it is not okay to interrupt.
