Year 3 & 4 Class News

3,4 B Class news

It’s been a busy first week back after the Easter holidays!

Our new topic this half term is ‘Explorers’.  This is a geography-based topic involving looking at climate, economy and tourism. This week we have focussed on the different climate zones and identified countries in the northern and southern hemispheres. As we move through the topic we will begin to focus primarily on York and Venice – comparing and contrasting the two cities.

In PE we are developing our basketball skills. This week we have been learning how to pass the ball with increasing accuracy – using bounce and chest passes. The children increased the distance of their throws to add more challenge. We then used our skills within Possession Ball – a fast paced team game where points are earned for successfully passing the ball to another team member without interception by the opposition.

Help at home by continuing to help your child access TTRS. Y3s, please focus on x3, x4 and x8. Y4s, focus on the times table you feel least confident with and please ensure you are doing regular TTRS soundchecks to increase your speed and confidence across all times tables.

Have a lovely weekend!

Living and Learning – Mental Wellbeing

Posted on Tuesday 26 March 2024 by Mrs Paterson

Throughout this half-term and across the phase, we have been looking at mental wellbeing. We’ve discussed different emotions and looked at different strategies to help us regulate, including mindful listening and mindful breathing. This linked well with our yoga learning in PE! We also talked about the principles of teamwork, recognising that we’re all the same yet all different and how we can work well together. Another theme was kindness – recognising that friends and family are important – and how we can be kind to others.

Help at home by thinking about ways you can be kind and what this looks, feels and sounds like in your daily life. emotion emojis

3,4A Class News

It’s been another busy week at Scholes as we’ve been completing end-of-term assessments and gearing up for next week’s production.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Monday for our topic review on computing. We’ve been working on applying different coding concepts using Scratch Jr so it was great to show this in action. Today in 3,4A, we focused on the term ‘decomposition’ – the process of breaking down instructions into smaller, more manageable steps – to create our own ‘crossy road’ game. Please see an example below.

In other news, 3/4A won the trophy this week for the Times Table Rockstars competition across the phase – great work, team! Times tables continue to be a key focus for us.

Help at home by continuing to help your child access TTRS. Y3s, please focus on x3, x4 and x8. Y4s, focus on the times table you feel least confident with.

We look forward to welcoming lots of parents and carers next week for the show – Gladis Baker, Gladiator!

DT – Cooking 3,4C

Posted on Friday 22 March 2024 by Mrs Wadsworth

This week, we created some delicious pitta pizzas, using a selection of toppings. They tasted amazing!

We discussed the importance of hygiene and how to stay safe when cooking, including using sharp knives safely.

Today, we evaluated our pizzas, discussing the skills we used to make them and what we could change next time.

Help at home by encouraging your child to help you prepare and cook food.

This week, we have continued to rehearse for our production of ‘Gladis Baker, Gladiator’. We’ve been adding actions to the songs and props to the different scenes so it’s starting to come together! Your child should either have a script or song lyrics to take home with them – it would be greatly appreciated if you could help them to practise their parts/ the songs at home. The children have also been sent home with a slip for their costume.  Please don’t buy anything new – if you’re stuck, let us know!

In Science, we have continued our learning about light. So far, we’ve learnt about different light sources (natural vs artificial), how to protect ourselves from the sun, how light travels in straight lines and how some materials let light through whilst others don’t – transparent, translucent, opaque.

In Writing, we have started a new unit on writing a report about Scratch Jr. This links with our current topic – Computing. We’ve been learning about repetition and sequencing and have created our own programs on Scratch Jr by writing different algorithms for our sprites.

Well done 3,4 C – what a busy couple of weeks!

This week, we have enjoyed creating our own animations using Scratch. We have explored the different codes and have used repetition in our algorithms.

Today, we raised money for Red Nose Day by wearing non-school uniform and making a voluntary contribution. Thank you to everyone who donated.

Last Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day! We shared the books that we particularly enjoy and dressed as our favourite characters.

The children are working hard on the Year 3,4 production. Help at home by encouraging your child to learn their lines and/or the lyrics to the songs. Well done Year 3,4. Keep projecting your voices!

This week has been a very busy week of rehearsals for our phase production. The children have worked really hard on the songs and lines and it is certainly coming together! Your child should have either a script or song lyrics to take home with them  – it would be greatly appreciated if you could help them to practice their parts/the songs at home.

As well as rehearsals, we have been working hard in lessons have completed a brilliant narrative based on a short clip called, ‘The Dragon Slayer’. Please ask us about this at home! We have also thoroughly enjoyed our learning in computing – creating our own ‘unplugged’ games and then exploring writing programs on Scratch Jnr.

We continue to work hard on our times tables and are ‘going for gold’ with our times table facts – recalling them at speed and practicing the ones we are less sure of.

Help at home by continuing to help your child access TTRS and asking them to read regularly to you. Thank you for your continued support.

Have a lovely weekend!

This week has looked a little different as we started rehearsing for our phase production, learning the songs and who says which bits from the script! Alongside this, we have been working hard across the curriculum and a highlight has been the fantastic narratives the class have written over the last few days about ‘The Dragon Slayer’. Please ask us about this at home! We have also enjoyed our learning about computing and creating our own ‘unplugged’ games, writing code for a sprite to follow.

For Word Book Day, we were treated to a show of our own – The Secret Garden. The children were a brilliant audience and seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves.

We continue to focus on our times tables and are ‘going for gold’ with our times table facts, recalling them at speed.

This week, we have enjoyed starting out new computing topic. We have created algorithms for off line games. Next week, we will be designing our own games and writing algorithms to solve them.

We have successfully completed the ‘Sponsored Times Table Challenge’ on Wednesday to raise money for the PTA and our school charity, Children’s Heart Surgery Fund. The scores were amazing; the children did a great job maintaining or improving their own personal score. Thank you to everyone who has raised some money so far!

Exciting news… we have started to learn the songs for our Spring production. Next week, we will start to look at the scripts and rehearse.

Help at home by continuing to help your child read regularly and access TTRS and/or Numbots.

Have a great weekend.

Living and Learning – Internet Safety and harms

Posted on Friday 09 February 2024 by Nicole Iveson

On Tuesday this week it was ‘Safter Internet Day’. This special celebration, which takes place in February of each year, aims to raise awareness of a safer and better internet for all, especially for children and young people.

We spent the morning off timetable learning about all of the different ways we can stay safe online and what to do/who to speak to if anything we see, hear or receive online makes us feel uncomfortable.

We looked at:

  • the risks of online relationships with strangers
  • understanding that everything you see online is not true
  • the importance of keeping personal information (such as full name/address/school) private
  • ensuring a balance of online and offline

The children engaged really well during these sessions and had lots of great ideas about how to stay safe online.
