3,4A Class News
This week, we have continued to rehearse for our production of ‘Gladis Baker, Gladiator’. We’ve been adding actions to the songs and props to the different scenes so it’s starting to come together! Your child should either have a script or song lyrics to take home with them – it would be greatly appreciated if you could help them to practise their parts/ the songs at home. The children have also been sent home with a slip for their costume. Please don’t buy anything new – if you’re stuck, let us know!
In Science, we have continued our learning about light. So far, we’ve learnt about different light sources (natural vs artificial), how to protect ourselves from the sun, how light travels in straight lines and how some materials let light through whilst others don’t – transparent, translucent, opaque.
In Writing, we have started a new unit on writing a report about Scratch Jr. This links with our current topic – Computing. We’ve been learning about repetition and sequencing and have created our own programs on Scratch Jr by writing different algorithms for our sprites.
Help at home by asking your child about the vocabulary in bold above!

Living and Learning – Internet Safety and harms
On Tuesday this week it was ‘Safter Internet Day’. This special celebration, which takes place in February of each year, aims to raise awareness of a safer and better internet for all, especially for children and young people.
We spent the morning off timetable learning about all of the different ways we can stay safe online and what to do/who to speak to if anything we see, hear or receive online makes us feel uncomfortable.
We looked at:
- the risks of online relationships with strangers
- understanding that everything you see online is not true
- the importance of keeping personal information (such as full name/address/school) private
- ensuring a balance of online and offline
The children engaged really well during these sessions and had lots of great ideas about how to stay safe online.
Living and Learning – Being Safe
In Living and Learning this week, each class teacher has delivered the NSPCC Speak Out Stay Safe assembly which aims to help children understand their rights, what is okay and not okay and what they can do if they are ever worried or scared.
We have discussed that:
- every child has the right to speak out and stay safe
- making a child feel sad, scared or worried is never okay and is not the child’s fault
- if they are ever worried, they know who to talk to so they can get help
- whatever their worry, they can always call Childline on 0800 1111 or visit childline.org.uk/kids

Well done to 3,4C! Another fabulous week of learning. We all had great fun visiting Yorkshire Museum on Wednesday.
We explored the Roman exhibition and saw Roman artefacts, walked on a mosaic and some of us dressed up as a Roman. In the Jurassic exhibition, we were amazed to see the huge collection of fossils.
Before getting on the coach, we were lucky enough to see the flood gates in action along the River Ouse, protecting the local residents’ homes from flooding. This experience will help our understanding of flood defences in our geography topic after Easter.
Today, we got to try out the new adventure playground at break time! It was great fun.

Help at home by regularly reading and supporting your child to access Numbots and TT Rock Stars.
Living and Learning – Drugs, alcohol and tobacco
Across all classes in Year 3,4, we have been learning about drugs, alcohol and tobacco. The definition we have learnt is that a drug is a substance that changes the way the body or mind works.
We had a visit from local charity D:Side where we learnt about the dangers of smoking and a huge variety of facts. These included there being 4000 chemicals in a cigarette. The children listened really well and made some thoughtful contributions.
Help at home by asking your child which facts they can remember.
