Year 5 & 6 Class News

Descriptive writing

Posted on Saturday 10 November 2018 by Mrs Lake

This week during writing lessons, Year 5 and 6 have used expanded noun phrases to describe. Children worked in pairs to describe a picture with expanded noun phrases using that, which or with to add extra information to their phrases.

We enjoyed describing characters from a Where’s Wally picture. Why not have a go at home? Use the picture below to describe someone or something:

  • Can you find a strong, bearded man with yellow trunks?
  • Can you find a ____, _____ noun with…?

Use with, which or that to add extra information to your clue.

We will remember them – Remembrance Day 2018

Posted on Friday 09 November 2018 by Mrs Latham

The children listened to poems and stories, then talked about Remembrance Day this week at school. They made poppies and some wrote messages to the soldiers.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Laurence Binyon

Thank you to Mrs Thorne for her artistic input and Peter Smith, from Lyndhurst View, who made the central piece.

Colour mixing Tudor Rose

Posted on Friday 26 October 2018 by Mr Lindsay

As part of our time travel topic, children have been learning about the Tudors. We decided to design roses to represent our own ‘houses’. First, we practised our colour mixing using only primary colours. After this, we had to draw the reflection of half the rose. To create definition, we used oil pastels. Finally, we painted the roses.

Continue the learning journey at home: You could create your own rose to represent your family; use collage techniques by cutting up magazines or use available textiles.

Basketball skills

Children in 5/6M have been practising their basketball skills. Last week, we focused on passing. This week, we looked at dribbling.

Ask your child about three different ways to pass the ball. Children coached each other on how to keep the ball when dribbling.

Living and learning – the 8 Rs

Posted on Saturday 13 October 2018 by Mr Lindsay

This week, year 5/6 debated the value of each of th 8 Rs for learning. They generated other words that might be added to the 8 Rs: respectful, relentless and being real. They used a diamond 9 to help select the most important R for learning and discussed the reason for their choice.
