Year 2 and Year 6 assessments
The STA has published an information leaflet and two videos for parents/carers of children in Year 2 and Year 6 about national curriculum assessments. The purpose of these materials is to help you understand more about the end of key stage assessments that will be administered in primary schools in May. (The end of Key Stage 1 is Year 2; the end of Key Stage 2 is Year 6.)
The materials provide basic information about the purpose and format of the tests, how parents can best support their children and how results will be reported.
Living and Learning: I can think about body image.
This week, we’ve been considering what makes people special. Is it what someone looks like? Or their qualities?
Does someone’s appearance change how we view them? Does appearance tell us everything about the persons qualities? How can you find out what makes people special?
The children had some very serious and incitful discussions about how and what you can change about your image. Ask your child to relay the discussion. They might have some questions for you about body image.
5,6F: Leeds University workshops
On Tuesday, Year 5/6 had the postponed (due to snow) ‘life forces’ science workshops. Two medical students from Leeds University visited with bags full of props and exciting activities for us all to take part in. One of the workshops was called ‘Survive and thrive’. The other ‘ Heart in action’. They were both varied and exciting! Ask the children to explain what they were learning in the photos below.
5,6M: Leeds University workshops
Yesterday, children had two science workshops delivered by students from Leeds University. The workshops helped consolidate our learning on the human body. One workshop focused on the circulatory system and the other on what humans need to survive.
You might want to try making your own model diaphragm. You’ll need a few items to help construct one:
- a plastic cup
- a straw
- two balloons
- a blob of Blu Tack
- an elastic band
Skipping Success
Skipping fever is alive and well at Scholes. Here are some children who have made rapid progress with their skipping skills over the last few weeks. Although each of them had different starting points, they have set their own targets and shown great resilience in achieving their goals.
114,530 skips at Scholes School today!
As part of our efforts to raise money for Sport Relief and our school charity, The Donkey Sanctuary, we aimed to complete 50,000 skips collectively today. We smashed our target and completed 114,530! We also enjoyed watching our Year 4 skipping team rehearse for the skipping competition in May.
Living and Learning: I can receive a compliment sensibly.
We’ve been thinking about how to receive compliments this week.
Giving and receiving compliments is a good way to make and keep friends and create positive relationships. We’ve reflected on how we react when we get a compliment. It can make someone’s day if we say thank you! Equally, it’s upsetting if you give a compliment that isn’t received well.
Chris the coach
We love having basketball coaching with Chris every Wednesday. Today, we learned how to pass the ball around the opposition. It was trickier than we thought!
Reading journals
Year 5/6 have been excited about using their reading journals at home. Here is a good example from Millie. She’s written a summary of a book she read at home.
Remember to record your thoughts about characters in them.
Topic book review
Thank you to the parents who were able to join the year 5/6 topic review session on Monday. The children were able to talk at length about their work, the work of their classmates and the learning that has taken place during this topic.
We agreed on some highlights:
- the Askham Bryan trip
- researching and classifying animals
- reading and following instructions to create a heart
This week, we shall be learning about adaptation and evolution as this ‘big topic’ comes to a close.
