Science – caring for our planet

For the first two weeks of this half term, KS1 are learning about how to care for our planet. We know it is everybody’s responsibility to look after planet Earth. We have a responsibility to look after our local area and we can do that by caring for other people, animals and plants.

During our first session, the children had a look at the ‘wildflower garden’ by our KS1 playground. It was there that we discovered bird feeders, hedgehog and bug houses and recently planted plants and trees by our Year 6 children. We know all of these things help to look after our planets.

‘Trees produce oxygen that we need to breathe.’ (S.C 2c)

‘Hedgehogs can find shelter in the houses.’ (HP 2C)

This week we compared two areas to one another. We decided to look at Scholes village and London. We talked about differences such as population, traffic and transport ect and the effects this may have on these environments. We talked about how we could improve each area to help the wildlife. Here are some examples of the posters we made in class!

Poem of the week: On The Ning Nang Nong!

Every week we have a different poem of the week. We read this every day in school. This week we are reading On The Ning Nang Nong by Spike Milligan.

Day 1 – Miss Young reads the poem to the class and models fluency.

Day 2 – Miss Young reads with the class and we focus on our prosody.

Day 3 – The class read it without Miss Young.

Day 4 – Children read the poem on their own and in a pair.

Day 5 – We all have a practise of saying the poem with our best fluency and prosody, without looking at the words. The poem is then sent home as part of children’s homework.

See below a video of 2C reading their poem of the week. This is day 3!

Internet safety day

Yesterday was Safer Internet Day.

We spent most of the day off timetable in order to look closely at how to stay safe online and how to be responsible users.

I know that some things online may not be true.

We discussed ‘fake news’ and what this means. We decided that if something is ‘fake’, it is not real and ‘news’ is information that is important. Fake news can be misleading and can give people the wrong impression or information.

We also talked about the importance of not sharing our personal information online, especially to strangers. We know we can’t trust what people say online and we should never plan to meet up with people we don’t know.

Personal information can include our name, age, address, contact details, school or clubs we go to. If we ever see something we are unsure of, or are not sure a website is safe, we must ask a trusted adult.

We read ‘Chicken Clicking’ by Jeanna Willis (one of our favourite authors). The story can be found online and has some brilliant talking points about internet safety.

Multiplication in Maths

In 2C we are learning about multiplication. We have been looking at lots of different representations.

First we count the amount of equal groups and then we count how many objects are in each group. Then we multiply these numbers together to get our total amount.

Science – animals

This half term in KS1, we are learning about animals in Science. We started the topic last week by discussing what a mammal is.

‘A mammal is an animal that has fur or hair and gives birth to live offspring.’

Examples of mammals include: dogs, cats, elephants, whales and bears.

This week we have been learning about fish and birds.  We labelled the features of both types of animal so that we know how to identify them. We also know what these features are for.

”Most birds have wings to fly, but not all birds can fly, like penguins.’ (2C)” Fish have fins and a tail to help them swim in water” (1A)

Bog Baby

This half term, KS1 are reading Bog Baby by Jeanne Willis. In the book we meet a cute creature called the ‘Bog Baby’. The Bog baby is discovered in a Magic pond, by two young sisters. The children decide to take the Bog Baby home to look after him and keep him as a pet. At first he is very happy, He has his own home, gets to eat cake crumbs each day and even gets to go to school. But then he starts to feel scared and homesick, and wants to go back home. This week, Year 2 wrote some sentences about how the Bog Baby might be feeling. They used their inference skills to draw information from both the illustrations and text. Some of the children even used conjunctions such as ‘because’ to explain their answers. Here is some of their work.

Christmas in 2C

This week we have been very excited about the run up to Christmas. We’ve done lots of lovely activities such as made cards, calendars and crafts. We’ve done 2 Christmas productions for the adults, seen some special Christmas decorations and today we had a lovely Christmas lunch. See what we’ve been getting up to!

We can’t wait for our Christmas party tomorrow (9am)! Remember to send your child in their own clothes, some snacks for after the party and a bag to send all of their bits and bobs home!

KS1 Science

For our final piece of Science learning this half term, KS1 have learning about the word ‘absorb.’ We did a comparative test where we used 4 different types of material to soak up the same measurement of water.

We found that cotton wool absorbed the most water, foil absorbed the least water and the carboard absorbed some but not all of the water.
