This week, we’d like your child to practise the following spellings in preparation for a spelling test on Friday 25 September 2020.

class grass many money

For some ideas on how to practise spellings in different ways, check out these ‘super spelling strategies’.

Fancy a challenge? Use these words in sentences. Or, create silly sentences using as many of them as you can – can you use them all?

18 September 2020

We’re setting weekly homework as we normally do. The key difference here is that Homework Books should stay at home for the time being. Just as normal, the tasks will be posted on the website. Instead of the task pasted into books, children will take home a piece of paper with the task on, too (like this!). The tasks will be a variety of Talk Time, Practice Makes Perfect and Creative, but especially the first two. Parents can email a picture or update about a completed task (just as you were doing with the home learning tasks we set in Spring and Summer terms). The homework will be reviewed in school, so some pictures would be good!

This week, our homework is Talk Time: I know the 8Rs for learning and how we use them at school, and at home.

In school, we use the 8Rs for learning: ready, responsive, risk-taking, responsibility, resourceful, resilient, reflect and remember.

We’d like the children to discuss what these words mean to them. Below is a list of questions that might help with your discussion.

How do the 8 Rs help you in school?

When have you used the 8 Rs outside of school?

How could you explain the meaning of each word in the 8 Rs?

Which 8 R do you think you use the most?

Which 8 R could you use more often?

Homework should be completed by Thursday 24 September 2020 and will be reviewed / celebrated in class.

3,4NV – nicolawadsworth@spherefederation.org & vickyrichardson@spherefederation.org

If your child is in 3,4N or 3,4E please send emails to both teachers.

Times tables

Next week, we’ll recap the 10x table. We’d really like you to help consolidate this learning at home. Children should practise in preparation for a test on Friday 25 September 2020.

In class, we’ve spotted lots of children using their fingers (and similar strategies) to count up when working out times tables. This is a good strategy if you’re unsure of a specific table, and is certainly better than getting it wrong, but we’d really like children to know these tables as facts – and be able to recall these facts in just a few seconds.

If your child fancies a challenge, practise the other facts they know if they know a specific table.

eg If I know that 2 x 10 = 20, what else do I know?

I know that…                       10 x 2 = 20                           20 = 10 x 2                           20 ÷ 10 = 2

20 ÷ 2 = 10                          2 = 20 ÷ 10                          10 = 20 ÷ 2

I can also use my place value knowledge…

2 x 100 = 200                       2 x 1000 = 2,000                 20 x 10 = 200                       200 x 10 = 2,000

3,4O Certificate Celebration

We’ve had another superb week in 3,4O. I’ve been really impressed by everyone’s readiness to learn. This week, we’ve focussed on working as a team and it’s been great to see people helping each other with our learning – helping someone else also helps us to learn something better, too!

Everyone in 3,4O could’ve received a certificate this week but, unfortunately (ask your child if they know what this word means – we’ve learnt it this week), I had to choose three.

Our certificates go to…(insert drum roll here)

For great learning…

Rowan- your attitude to learning has been brilliant this week and you’ve always got your hand up – well done!

For sport and physical activity…

Layton – for showing great determination every time we go outside to complete the ‘Daily Mile’ – you never stop and never give up!

For living and learning…

Elliot- you are always ready to learn and this helps everyone around you to stay on task, too. You also impressed me with your ability to remember lots of interesting facts and birds and dinosaurs – you definitely taught me a few things (‘everyday’s a school day’).

3,4 O Certificate Celebration

It has been brilliant to have all the children back in school this week and it’s been lovely to finally meet the new members of our class. Everyone has come into school with an amazing attitude to their learning and they’ve settled in so well – I’m super excited about the rest of the year!

As we can’t have the celebration assembly on a Friday at the moment, we will be posting the certificate winners on here each week for each class.

For great learning…

Noah – you have come back to school with a mature attitude to your learning. You’ve participated in all lessons and tried so hard with your work. Well done – keep it up!

For sport and physical activity…

Louis – despite not being able to actively participate in our PE lessons this week, you were able to help your classmates by coaching them through the lesson – well done, Louis.

For living and learning…

Ella – all week, you have greeted myself, and others, politely and with a smile on your face. Thanks for making our class a happy, healthy and polite place to be.

Reading books

At the end of the week, your child was given a reading book and their reading diary to take home.

Reading is one of the most beneficial things children can do at home. Whilst we appreciate the craziness of life, we’d love it if you could read with your child for 15 minutes every day.

This book and their reading diary should be returned to school every week.

If your child is in Mrs McCormick’s class, they should have their book and diary in school every Monday.

If your child is in Mrs Wadsworth’s class, they should have their book and diary in school every Friday.

If your child is in Mr Catherall’s class, they should have their book and diary in school every Friday.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please ask your child’s class teacher.

This week, our homework is Practice Makes Perfect: I can write simple sentences about myself.

In our writing lessons, we’ve been practising writing simple sentences with capital letters and full stops – it’s been a while since we’ve written. To consolidate this learning, we’d like children to continue to practise this at home. Our writing learning is going to get a bit trickier from now so it’d be great if children feel really confident with this basic skill.

Here’s an example…

My favourite food is pasta.

If your child needs more of a challenge, ask them to write an ‘All about me’. This could be one paragraph, or more.

Homework should be completed by Thursday 17 September 2020 and will be reviewed / celebrated in class.

Times tables

This week, we’ve recapped the 2x table. Some of us are confident, some of us less so. We’d really like you to help consolidate this learning at home. Children should practise in preparation for a test on Friday 18 September 2020.
