PE: volleyball

5,6B have been warming up their volleyball skills. They worked in pairs to learn and develop some basic serves and passes. They enjoyed being able to ‘bump’ the ball to their partner and then progressed further to an overhand serve. They had to think about the position of their feet, hands and the ball in order to project the ball accurately. The end of the sessions saw us trying our hand at some actual games of volleyball. The children set up a small court and created a point system to see who won. We will keep working on these skills over the next few weeks.

Peace Flame in Scholes

Scholes will be celebrating The United Nations International Day of Peace on Saturday 17th September in the Peace Flame Garden at 11am. The children in year 5/6 were asked to create a banner to celebrate this special occasion. The theme needed to incorporate the end of racism. The children used an outline of their hands and added positive messages and images about the importance of ending racism. The banner will be displayed in the garden this week – go along and see if you can spot your child’s hand. The banner looks amazing and will look great in Scholes, showing the school’s commitment to our local community.

Science: classifying living things

This week, we have been learning about Carl Linnaeus – a Swedish naturalist and explorer who was the first to create a system to define species of organisms by name. We worked together to create our own classification keys that would allow us to sort, classify and identify objects from around the classroom. This was based on the physical characteristics of the objects. We found it quite hard to think of questions that would allow us to sort the objects effectively, but we got there eventually. We also applied some great scientific vocabulary.

Getting to know each other

Welcome back to all the children in 5/6B. We’ve had a great day getting to know each other and finding out what everyone got up to in the holiday. I’ve bombarded the children with lots of information today about what the new school year will hold – I’m sure you’ll hear all about it. The children will have brought their new reading record book home – please check your child’s bag. Let’s get off to a great start by reading daily at home, this has such a huge impact on learning. Please record when your child reads and sign to say they have read. Your child will need these in school every Friday, but every day would be even better. Keep working hard on TTR at home also – keep those multiplication facts in the front of our heads!

Please feel free to ask any questions, or come and introduce yourself if we’ve never met. I’m looking forward to a happy and healthy year with 5/6B.

Living and learning: I understand some drugs are harmful

What is a drug? This is the question that year 5/6 have been considering this week. We have discussed all types of drugs – illegal and legal – this includes over-the-counter and prescription medicines. We have talked about the effects drugs have on you and the risks that they can cause. The children then looked at different scenarios that included drugs such as caffeine or alcohol and they had to discuss if they put a person at low, medium or high risk.

Total Warrior

Last week, year 6 had an absolutely brilliant time at Total Warrior at Bramham Park. The excitement built as we allocated running numbers and tied our bands around our heads. The race began and we were off – through stinking bogs, sliding into muddy rivers, climbing over wall and sliding through tubes. When we thought it was nearly over, we had to face a freezing water-filled skip, dunking ourselves below the muddy surface. The end involved sliding down a gigantic water slide to the claps and cheers of our audience. We apologise to parents for all the muddy clothes, but we had a great time!

Living and learning: RSE

Year 5/6 have been enjoying our recent RSE learning – this is relationships and sex education. It’s really important that during these sessions the children demonstrate maturity and a willingness to learn – they have definitely lived up to this expectation. The first couple of sessions focused on vocabulary – making sure the children understood the anatomical names for the body parts. This links well with their science learning also. We reminded the children about the NSPCC PANTS campaign that promotes the fact that privates are private, always remember your body belongs to you,  no means no, talk about things that might upset you and speak up, someone can help. The children have shown great respect and empathy during these sessions.

Triathlon

It was our opportunity to take part in the FOSP triathlon yesterday, on a very hot day! The children were split into three different teams – red, white and blue. Children that had brought bikes to school, cycled around the track, whilst others ran. The children competed to complete as many laps as possible. We will find out the winning team later in the week.

Super sewing!

We have been brushing up on our sewing skills today. As part of our design technology unit, we will be designing and sewing cushions.  Our first job was to master threading a needle and securing a knot at the end ready for stitching – this ensures the thread doesn’t pull through the fabric. This took quite a long time and the children were excellent at helping each other. They watched a demonstration of how to do running stitch and back stitch and created their own stitching on binca. The children who took to this like a duck to water were able to challenge themselves by stitching a shape, a pattern or even their initials.
