Can you untangle what fractional part is represented by each of the ten numbered shapes?

Need some support? Here is a link to the problem with some support and possible solutions.

12 May 2020: Home Learning

Hello!

Hope you’re all well today and ready for another day of home learning.

Remember the importance of keeping fit and healthy as well as completing your home learning tasks. Are you eating enough fruit and vegetables? Are you keeping yourself hydrated with water? What type of exercise are you doing daily? It could be some skipping, riding your bike or you might still be a dedicated viewer of Jo Wicks.

Also, don’t forget to check out Mr Catherall’s quiz from last Friday if you haven’t already done so. He gets you doing some crazy stuff!

Here’s your learning for today…

Year 5/6 Reading

Watch this video to find out your learning for today.

You will also need to read this text.

Year 5/6 Living and Learning

This week’s living and learning statement is ‘I recognise the importance of money’.

In preparation for our living and learning lesson tomorrow, your task is to:

  • Create a poster, spider diagram, list or any other choice you can think of, that shows what you know about the importance of money.

Here’s some ideas to think about:

  • What activities can you do without money? What can’t you do if you don’t have money?
  • What do you do with money? Do you save it, or spend it immediately? Why?
  • How do people make money? Ask your parents/carers at home to help you.
  • Could you live without money? Explain your thoughts.

Tomorrow, we will discuss some of these ideas in a video lesson – good luck!

Love of Reading

Some people have been in touch today to let me know what books they are enjoying at home and in which places they like to sit and read. Violet has been reading about Ancient Egypt, as this is something that particularly interests her. She knows a lot about the Gods and the hieroglyphs they used and she liked that fact that the book described mummification and the afterlife. She has chosen to read in the garden this morning so that she can enjoy this lovely  weather.

Charlie has sent a picture of a cosy, small space that he likes to read in. It looks really peaceful in there and it’s good to know you have a good supply of toilet rolls in case you are reading a sad story! He is enjoying ‘Matt Millz’ by Harry Hill. Maybe this is a book you might consider reading in the future.

Imogen has been reading Mr Gum and the power crystals. She read it in the garden so she could enjoy the sunshine. She likes the book because it is funny and interesting.

Lleyton has been reading the 36 story tree house book. He likes that it has lots of smaller stories and that they always add a 13 storey to the tree house. He read his book in the den that he built.

06 May 2020: Home Learning

Good morning and happy Wednesday. Your learning for today is below, however don’t forget to enjoy a book when you get chance. This might be one that you’ve got from school, or you might have that favourite book that you haven’t read for ages. Find a quiet spot and enjoy a good read!

Whist you are getting on with your work today, have a think about which of the 8 R’s you are using. Have you had to be resilient? Are you reflecting on what you are learning? Are you taking safe risks?

Here is your learning for today…

Challenges

Wednesday challenges

Year 6 Maths

Welcome to the polygon party.

Watch the short video about identifying polygons and then play the fill in the gaps quiz.

Write five of your own questions about identifying polygons.

The interior angles of an equilateral triangle total 180 degrees.

The interior angles of a square total 360 degrees.

(n-2) x 180

n stands for the number of sides. We can use this equation to calculate the interior angles of any regular polygon.

E.g. triangle = (3 -2) x 180 = 180

Square = (4-2) x180 = 360

Work out the interior angle totals for a pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon and decagon.

Year 5/6 Reading

Today, we’re going to take a break from our ‘Hobbit’ themed reading learning. Instead, I’d like you to complete this BBC Bitesize lesson (https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zfx6t39). This is the English lesson from 01 May – The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd.

Year 5/6 Art

Today, we are going to use our artistic talents! I am always amazed at optical illusions (where your eyes deceive your brain) and I find them fascinating. I thought we could all have a go at making our own!

Why are we doing this?

During this school year, we have been learning about different skills that can be used in paintings, drawings and sketches to improve our artistic abilities. Skills such as shading and colour choice are vital when improving form. This task is a great way to improve our skills and create an exciting optical illusion!

Look at this lesson from Oak National Academy and have a go at making your own.

I would love to see some of your finished pieces – don’t worry if you go wrong, I’m currently on my 3rd attempt! Please email myself (Mr Freeman), or any of your class teachers with your finished illusions.

05 May 2020: Home Learning

Good morning everyone.

We hope you had a good night’s sleep last night and that you’re ready for your learning today.

Here are some spellings for you to have a go at. We will be looking at words that contain the ‘ough’ letter string. Remember the strategies that we use in class to help you learn the words – you could do some silly sentences, word doodling or speed writing!

04 May 2020: Home Learning

Good morning.

I have already been inundated with messages and photographs of the learning that 5/6 S have been doing. It’s so great that you are all keeping in touch and letting me know what you are getting up to.

Lilia has sent me the art work that she and her mum did. They were listening to Kelly Clarkson’s, Stronger, at the time. I wonder who’s is the best – what do you think?

Ava has been working hard on her music lesson also and she has produced this great scratch picture. I love it!

I was very pleased to hear from William over the weekend. He sounds like he has been very busy entertaining himself during lockdown. He told me he has built campfires, slept in the caravan in the garden and built two sheds! He will be coming back to school exhausted! He has had some new additions to the family too – his family are now the proud owner of some chickens. Some of them look huge!

04 May 2020: Home Learning

Thank you to Alex who has sent me what he has been working on today. Here are his thoughts on the article he read called ‘Car Compositions.’

‘I think I would like it if people made cars with different sounds even though I don’t actually know what sounds they mean.  The BMW i4 will be launched next year with different sounds to make the lives of pedestrians ‘’less chaotic and more beautiful’’It would be cool if cars could make more sounds than just an engine. I really like cars, especially supercars and hypercars. The person who is making the sounds is the composer of the music from the Lion King ( I wouldn’t really like lion king music in my car. )’

Alex also set me a photo of his art work.

Charlie sent me this message also:

‘The article I am going to talk about is called: Minecraft upgraded. The update introduces ray-tracing to the game. For ray-tracing you need a seriously powerful computer. Ray-tracing has been used in CGI movies for years. I chose this article because I play Minecraft.’

Jessica has been enjoying her learning at home. She has created her time capsule and created her own line graph showing the changes to her heart rate after exercise. She has even found time to make sure she is looking glamorous!
