English – Here We Are by Oliver Jeffers

We are using our class novel, Here We Are (Notes for Living on Planet Earth) by Oliver Jeffers to inspire our reading and writing learning this half term. We have enjoyed reading and discussing the book, picking out the main themes and messages.

We will link the book to our geography learning about our local area and art too. We will be reading about our school and Scholes, then writing about our school and village too.

Help at home

  • read the book again and talking about the key messages
  • talk about our local area – particularly what you like and dislike about it
  • help your child learn their address
  • read other books by Oliver Jeffers

There is a link to listen to it here. (This is a YouTube link. Top tip for watching YouTube with your child: go to the settings cog along the play bar and turn off autoplay – this avoids an inappropriate clip coming up automatically, and helps to discourage your child from passively watching clip after clip.)

Science – tyres, air and bouncing!

We have been learning about John Dunlop and his invention of the pneumatic tyre.  He wanted to make wheels bouncy and therefore more comfortable to travel with. We tested 4 different balls for their bounciness : a yellow tennis ball, a wool pom-pom, a solid hockey ball and a green plastic football. We made the comparative test fair by rolling the balls from the same place down a ramp. We measured how far the ball bounced back from a table.

Most us of predicted that the tennis ball would bounce the furthest.

The tennis ball and football bounced back from the table but the football bounced the furthest.

The solid hockey ball hit the table and stopped. It didn’t bounce at all.

The pom-pom didn’t reach to table to bounce at all!

We thought that air inside and the stretchy plastic material of the football made it the bounciest.

Living and learning : Mental Health

We’ve started a three week block of living and learning lessons around mental health this week. Being able to identify and talk about feelings and emotions is an important part of mental health. In our living and learning lessons, we have shared our feelings and emotions and talked about how emotions can change and that they don’t stay the same forever. We can look after our mental health by doing this regularly.

Awesome, ace and amazing adjective day

We had a fabulous day learning about word classes today and, in particular, adjectives.

We all dressed up as an adjective, learnt a song about adjectives and made some interesting expanded noun phrases.

Help at home by talking about your favourite adjectives. Mrs Latham’s is discombobulated, Miss Lowry’s is flabbergasted and Miss Young’s is plump!
