Living and learning : Mental health (recognising emotions)
We have begun a topic on mental health in our Living and Learning lessons. This week, we have talked about our feelings. Knowing that it is fine to have different emotions, that they change frequently and that they don’t last forever can help children manage their own feelings and behaviour.
Living and Learning : Friends and family
In our Living and Learning lessons we have been talking about recognising how others are feeling. This includes spotting signs that show us that our friends are happy or sad. We watched this video about Elmer and his friends. We talked about how what we do can affect other people’s feelings. (This is a YouTube link. Top tip for watching YouTube with your child: go to the settings cog along the play bar and turn off autoplay – this avoids an inappropriate clip coming up automatically, and helps to discourage your child from passively watching clip after clip.)
Words, words, words
We have been spending lots of time teaching reading : story time, reading together (reading fluency), daily phonics lessons, vocabulary lessons, RIC (comprehension), individual reading, discussing books we have read, giving star ratings and lots more!
Being able to read and write the year 1 and year 2 common exception words is important to develop fluency. These words do not follow the usual spelling rules and so are sometimes tricky to read or write. They need to be learnt as whole words and just remembered.
We try to make learning them fun – chalking them on the playground for example!

Living and learning – 8Rs for learning
We have been talking about the Eight Rs for learning.
Out current class novel, After The Fall (by Dan Santat), enabled us to talk about resilience and how it’s important to keep on trying and not give up, even when things are tough. Our Talk Time homework also enabled children to share when they had shown resilience.
I never give up when I’m skipping.
I showed resilience when I did the crossbar challenge. It’s hard to hit the crossbar with the football.
I showed resilience learning to ride my bike without stabilisers.
Science – habitat hunt
We have had some great science lessons and discussions this week, learning all about habitats. The children enjoyed exploring our school habitat and we found some amazing animals : birds, bees, flies, caterpillars, woodlice, centipedes, worms and butterflies.
Leeds Needs Trees
Leeds City Council have launched a scheme to increase the number of trees around the city. Collect tree seeds (conkers, acorns, beech nuts and sweet chestnuts) and take them to a collection point around the city. The Arium is the closest one to school and you will be helping create new habitats for birds and animals.
