This week, our homework is Practice Makes Perfect: I know my lines and/or the song lyrics for the production.

Our end of year production is not too far away now so all children should make sure they know their lines (and the lines before) and the song lyrics.

This week, we continue to focus on the spelling rule ‘double up for a short vowel sound’. After completing an activity last week, this week, children should learn the words below in preparation for a spelling test on Friday 21 June 2019.

accumulate                             immediately

recommend                            interrupt

sufficient                                  quarrelled

exaggerate                              accommodation

Friday 07 June 2019

This week, we’re recapping a spelling rule that we have previously learnt: double up for a short vowel sound. In our writing, lots of us are still not ‘doubling up’ for short vowel sounds. For example, when writing the word ‘hopping’, many of us might spell it ‘hoping’ which is incorrect. In this example, the ‘o’ makes a short vowel sound and so the next consonant ‘p’ needs to be doubled up. This is an especially significant error as it completely changes the meaning of the word.

This week, children should practise this rule by writing a short story or poem that contains as many ‘double up’ words as possible.

Friday 07 June 2019

This week, the whole school has the same Creative homework: I can illustrate a moral choice.

A moral choice is committing to act for what you believe is right and good. As responsible citizens, we have a duty to ensure that we, and others, act on what we think is correct. This homework, which links to our on-going living and learning work, will help children to further understand this.

As this is a creative homework we look forward to receiving a range of responses. Children should think about something they feel passionate about and illustrate this however they see fit.

They could…

  • create a piece of art that shows the choice
  • write a news report about someone making a moral choice
  • find a key person from history and explain how, and why, they made a moral choice
  • create a short piece of drama to show the choice being made.

This homework should be completed by Thursday 13 June 2019.

Our new topic: Breaking Barriers

This half-term, Year 5 and 6 are starting a new topic: Breaking Barriers. This topic is designed to help children better understand protected characteristics. It is against the law to discriminate against someone because of a protected characteristic. We have talked about these in school before and your child is aware of them already. However, we feel that this is a really important topic and will be focusing on each of the protected characteristics in more detail. For your information, here are the nine protected characteristics:

  • age
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • race
  • religion or belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation

If you would like further information about what will be covered, or have any general questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to speak to your child’s class teacher.

Thursday 16 May 2019

This week, the whole school has the same Creative homework: I can show what I know about a particular job.

This homework is in preparation for our themed week which is next week. Throughout the week, we’ll focus on money. One aspect of this is how money is earned. Obviously, our children are a little young to be earning money but it is really important that they have aspirations.

For their homework this week, children should decide on a job (maybe one they want to do or one that a family member has) and find out some useful information about the profession: what a ‘normal’ day looks like, how much you can earn, what qualifications/experience you need, etc.

Children could respond to this creative homework in a range of ways:

  • Create a poster
  • Make a ‘project board’
  • Re-create a ‘day in the life of…’ and document this in pictures
  • Make a presentation
  • Compare a few different jobs
  • Devise a short play to show their peers what the job involves
  • Research the salary and decide how they might spend their money
  • Write a job application

Of course, there are many other ways in which children could respond. Children should be ready to celebrate their learning as part of their homework review by Thursday 23 May 2019.

Tour De Scholes

On Friday, exactly one week after the Tour De Yorkshire travelled past school, Year 5 took on their own mammoth ride: The Tour De Scholes. Arranged by Cycle North, who came into school recently to lead our Bikeability training, the ride was an opportunity for us all to don our helmets and explore some of the scenery on our doorstep.

Two children from 5,6SK wrote this news report based on the day:

On the 10th May 2019, Year 5 had the oopoortunity to venture out of school the memorable (and muddy) trip to Temple Newsam.

The 14 mile trip consisted of muddy fields, bridleways and especially hard hills. It was a great achievement to go on a bike ride that long and lots of riders agreed it was quite tiring (including Mr Catherall, Mrs Welsby and Mr Gledhill). During the day, there was a variety of emotions shown from the Year 5 crew. The most common: grit and determination!

Although some of our friends had to be persuaded to continue up the monstrous hills, everyone made it there in the end. One rider, in group 2, said: “I was determined to carry on and thought it would be easier than it was!”

Lots of riders said they would recommend the ride if you want to get out more on your bike. After all, you need to appreciate the marvellous world surrounding us.

Here’s some pictures of us enjoying the day…

They have identified 10 spellings that they need to learn or revise. Children should learn these spellings in preparation for a spelling test on Friday 10 May 2019.

Children should discuss this idea with an adult at home and be ready to share their views by Thursday 09 May 2019.
