Welcome Back!
Welcome back to all the Year 5/6 phase. I hope you and your families have had a lovely summer. Whilst I’m sure there are some of you that are bursting with excitement to return to school, I’m sure there are some of you that might be feeling a bit nervous or anxious. This is completely normal and to be honest, the teachers are feeling the same way too. We can’t wait to see you all back at school and hear our classrooms full of learning and giggling again. If you are moving to a new class this time, we can’t wait to get to know you and you will be settled in in no time at all. Maybe make sure you start to think about your bedtime routines a bit now. Do you need to be going to bed a bit earlier before Monday? Have you got all your uniform and PE kit that you need? Make sure your making some healthy food choices over the weekend so you’re feeling healthy for the first day of term.
Anyway, enjoy the weekend and we’re looking forward to seeing you on Monday morning.
Welcome Back
The year 5/6 team are brimming with excitement at the thought of returning to school.
You’ll notice a few changes around the school such as the new fence in the KS2 playground. The biggest change for the classes is that we’ll now be known as 5/6A, B or C (hopefully less confusing).
5/6A -Mr Freeman, Mrs Ravenscroft and Miss Joicey
5/6B – Mrs Hogarth and Mrs Goodwin
5/6 C (C for cool obviously) – Mr Lindsay and Miss McAleer
We’re really looking forward to this year. Our first topic is geography based and called Where in the World am I? At home, discuss your local area, our county, capital city and where we fit into Great Britain.
We’ll also be learning how to read maps as we take a virtual tour of some of our national parks. We’ll be learning about some Uk rivers and mountains through the use of OS and digital maps.
This half term will see the return of our class assemblies which will be recorded for parents to view.
Finally, there’s just a few reminders:
- make sure your child comes with a water bottle
- when the bell rings at 8:50am (yes, that early again), children walk straight into class instead of lining up
- children wear PE to school on their PE days
See you all on Monday morning for a happy and healthy return to school.
The Year 5/6 team
PE days – which day to I wear my PE uniform?
We are going to continue with wearing PE kit on PE days – this cuts down on lost property and saves learning time, so we’re going to continue this for at least next year as a longer term trial. On the days your child has PE, they should come to school in their school uniform PE kit. (Track-suit bottoms instead of shorts would be good on colder days. Footwear : black/brown/grey/white flat shoes which are safe to run around in.)
Footwear on PE days could be children’s ‘school shoes’ which are often a plain ‘trainer’ style anyway, if you want to avoid having to buy 2 pairs of shoes.
Here is a link to our uniform policy.
Please find below the days each class has allocated PE times, which will be taught outdoors, except in extreme weather.
- F2 Sunshine (Miss Parling) – Monday and Friday
- F2 Rainbow (Mrs Allen-Kelly/Mrs Wilkins) – Monday and Friday
- 1A (Miss Lowry) – Thursday and Friday
- 1,2B (Mrs Latham) – Thursday and Friday
- 2C (Mr Gathercole) – Wednesday and Thursday
- 3,4A (Miss Harker) – Tuesday and Thursday
- 3,4B (Mr Catherall) – Monday and Tuesday
- 3,4C (Mrs McCormick/Mrs Wadsworth) – Tuesday and Wednesday
- 5,6A (Mr Freeman) – Monday and Wednesday
- 5,6B (Mrs Hogarth) – Tuesday and Wednesday
- 5,6C (Mr Lindsay) – Wednesday and Thursday
Year 5/6 Sport Afternoon
Year 5/6 had an amazing afternoon today, completing our Sports Day. Despite the heat, the children applied themselves brilliantly to all the races. The races included hurdles, long distance, relay and the bean bag sprint – it was like the Olympics!
Well done to everyone that participated – you were amazing!
Winning Warriors!
Well, we survived. Every single warrior made it to the end of the Total Warrior course. There was great anticipation before we set off – nerves were building.
Once the race began, sounds of squeals, giggling and screaming filled the quiet countryside. The children overcame the Bog of Doom, mud slides, skips of muddy water and of course, the famous water slide at the end. They overcame fears, supported each other, encouraged others and got mud in all sorts of places!
It was an absolute pleasure to take the Year 6 on this visit – it certainly seemed a great way to end the year. Sorry to the parents for all the extra washing at the weekend! We hope every single warrior enjoyed themselves – although I’m not sure who enjoyed it the most, the children or the teachers!

Scarecrow competition
We will be making some scarecrows in school. If anyone lives in the village, you can join in individually and display them outside your house. If not, and you want to make your own, bring your scarecrow to school on Friday 16 July and we will display it outside school over the weekend.
Design Technology
Let the building commence!
5/6S have been progressing well with their DT topic this week. They have now completed the design process and are able to get hands on. We spent the first part of the lesson working out the precise dimensions of our cars so that we selected the correct amount of materials. The children had to accurately measure how much dowel they would need to build the frame for their vehicles. They all worked super hard and they really enjoyed turning their hand to drilling, sawing and constructing. The children followed all the safety rules brilliantly and the classroom ended up looking like a carpenters workshop!
