Is the school day always this short?
Today has flown by. It was fantastic to see the children back in school looking refereshed and ready for a new school year. 5/6C had plenty of stories to tell about their holidays including a best day ever: Putt Stars and Maccys! Whether it was a sleepover or a trip under Niagara Falls, children beamed with joy about their summer holidays.
All children in year 5/6 have visited the library today and received their reading journal. It’s really important that both of these books are kept in your child’s book bag so that they bring them to school each day and read every evening. Share the reading with your child: take turns to read a page each; read to each other on alternate days; take a day off reading and just discuss the book over a cuppa.
It was wonderful to see all the children in the correct uniform. Please help us to maintain these standards throughout the year so that the children look and feel part of a happy and healthy place to learn.
Getting to know each other
Welcome back to all the children in 5/6B. We’ve had a great day getting to know each other and finding out what everyone got up to in the holiday. I’ve bombarded the children with lots of information today about what the new school year will hold – I’m sure you’ll hear all about it. The children will have brought their new reading record book home – please check your child’s bag. Let’s get off to a great start by reading daily at home, this has such a huge impact on learning. Please record when your child reads and sign to say they have read. Your child will need these in school every Friday, but every day would be even better. Keep working hard on TTR at home also – keep those multiplication facts in the front of our heads!
Please feel free to ask any questions, or come and introduce yourself if we’ve never met. I’m looking forward to a happy and healthy year with 5/6B.
Welcome back!
I know most parents are probably asking themselves, “Do they have to go back to school so soon?” All good things must come to an end.
The Year 5/6 team are really excited to be welcoming you back to Scholes this year. We’ve got lots of fun activities planned such as bikeability, a new residential and some other trips which you’ll find out about during the year.
This week you might be frantically looking around for school uniform, lunch boxes, water bottles and PE kit.
You can look on our school website for our school uniform and PE kit policy. We typically have spare, clean items of uniform, including PE kit, for children to change into if they’re not wearing the items set out in this policy.
You might also be wondering what children need to bring into school. Children should bring a bag to school everyday. In the first week, they will have the opportunity to take a library book home and a book chosen by their class teacher.
Children should also have a filled water bottle (only water please) and perhaps a sun hat and suncream if it’s a sunny day.
School will provide all the stationery. Children should not bring their own equipment. They will be asked to keep it at home. I hope you’ll understand that this will help to reduce any issues that this might cause in school.
In year 5/6, parents can choose to allow their child to walk home without an adult.
Let’s make this a year to remember.
5/6 team
What a Week!
What a week it was for Year 5/6 last week. Filled with happy, hard-working pupils and very proud parents and teachers, the week was a huge success for all.
The 5/6 production finally came round and the performances were nothing short of excellent. Thanks to all the parents and adults for coming to watch, support the children and for buying our leaflets to raise money for the school – it is very much appreciated by all involved. The hard work of the children was rewarded with a standing ovation from all the adults and teachers on the final night of the show!
To end the week, the Key stage two disco took place on Friday night. All pupils behaved fantastically well and were great role models for our school. There were some fantastic dance moves on show (I think the sugar rush from the tuck shop helped!).
All in all, a brilliant penultimate week – well done to everyone involved!
Scholes in Bloom – winning design
A group of children went out to meet the Britain in Bloom judges today. The winning designer of the Scholes in Bloom competition was there and everyone admired the planted design in the flowerbed outside school. It looks fabulous!
Living and learning: I understand some drugs are harmful
What is a drug? This is the question that year 5/6 have been considering this week. We have discussed all types of drugs – illegal and legal – this includes over-the-counter and prescription medicines. We have talked about the effects drugs have on you and the risks that they can cause. The children then looked at different scenarios that included drugs such as caffeine or alcohol and they had to discuss if they put a person at low, medium or high risk.
