Don’t forget to come along to the Ofsted review meeting which is coming up.

On Wednesday 10 July at 5pm, we invite you to school to reflect on our recent Ofsted inspection.

We’re delighted to have been judged as ‘good’ in all areas.

The meeting is an opportunity to reflect on the inspection. We’ll talk briefly about the inspection, we’ll talk about the next steps for us as a school, and you’ll have time to ask us any specific questions about the inspection report, or let us know any comments or concerns.

On the same day, teachers are available from 3.30pm to 5.00pm to talk through the end-of-year report your child will have brought home – why not pop along for that and stay for the Ofsted meeting?

Spelling

This week’s spelling homework is a word search activity. The words are some common misspelt words taken from the Year 3 / 4 spelling list.

Tips: check the spelling of the word carefully before your child searches for it. Then, check every letter is included.

Challenge: Use the blank template to make one of your own either from the Year 3 / 4 Spelling list, or from topic words in class.

For example: refugee, migrant, choice, border,  movement, environment, welcome, language, safety.

This week’s homework is Creative and due on Thursday 4th July 2019.

‘Explain what you have learned about refugees’

We have read a fantastic narrative poem The Day War Came, by Nicola Davies; had a workshop with Nola from My Bright Kite; and explored our own understanding through welcome posters in Art.

Now it’s the children’s turn to show what they know.

They can think about:

  • Why do people leave their countries?
  • What problems will they face?
  • How will they feel coming to a new place?
  • How do refugees cope with these challenges?
  • Where do refugees come from?
  • How can we welcome refugees?
  • Find out about famous refugees.

Your child can show their learning and understanding in a variety of ways:

an acrostic poem, a poster, a drawing, a collage, a story, or any other creative way you wish!

Living and Learning – human life cycle

Week 3 of our Relationships and Sex education looks at the stages of the human life cycle. During our Living and Learning sessions, children have learned about growing from young to old and that they are also growing and changing.

We also discussed:

  •  key stages in the human life cycle
  • some ways that we have changed since
    we were babies
  • that all living things including humans
    start life as babies

The annual survey is now closed

Thanks to all parents / carers who completed an annual survey. The deadline for this was yesterday. School leaders will now start looking through the feedback and this will help tell us how we can keep getting better and better.

We can’t guarantee to meet the needs and wants of every parent / carer, but we do assure you that we consider all the points raised and aim to act on specific points that are raised by many, or a useful idea raised by just a few.

Last year, based on your feedback, for example, we changed how we update you about your child’s progress so that you get five updates over the year: a parent-teacher consultation in Autumn 1 and Spring 1; a Learning Update ‘mini-report’ in Autumn 2 and Spring 2; and a final end-of-year report in Summer 2.

We’re looking forward to reading your views.

Friday 21 June 2019

This week’s homework is Talk Time and due on Thursday 27th June 2019.

Look at the two posters about water safety.  Can you identify the hazards / potential dangers?

Talk about the hazards identified in these different areas with an adult and discuss the ways to stay safe.

Think about the Water Safety Code:

  • Stop and think
  • Stay together
  • What number do you call in an emergency?
  • What do the different beach flags represent?

Talk about any other learning of Drowning Prevention Week (Y4s have completed specific techniques in swimming lessons).

Last chance to submit your views

At Scholes (Elmet) Primary, we’re always keen to hear your views.

The annual survey is still available for you to let us know your thoughts, but goes offline on Monday 24 June so you’ve only a few days left. The survey will only take a few minutes or so.

We hope that you let us know any questions, comments and concerns (as well as causes for celebration!) whenever these crop up, but we like to gather the views more generally at the end of the year. We’re looking forward to reading your views.
