The weather is changing!

It has been a cold one this week. Our hats, scarves, gloves and warm coats are back out in full force as the weather changes.

Since September, Ks1 have been tracking the weather and spotting changes in temperature and how this is affecting a tree in our school playground.

In September, the tree was full of green leaves. The weather was warm and sunny most days. On the day we checked the temperature it was 18 degrees.

The following month was October. We checked the tree again. The season had changed from Summer to autumn. As we checked the tree, the weather was cloudy, but mild. The temperature was 13 degrees. The tree had lost some of its leaves. Many of the leaves remaining on the tree had turned brown or orange.

This week we checked the tree again. It is now November. The tree has lost nearly all of its leaves. We took this photograph the day before it snowed. It was 1 degree when the photo was taken. The following day it was -1 degree. It was very cold.

We know that the seasons affect how the weather changes and this causes changes in the leaves of deciduous trees.

KS1 are looking forward to checking the tree again next month!

Help at home by discussing seasonal changes!

Children in Need

Today we are celebrating Children in Need. This morning, each teacher has spoken to their class about Children in Need including what it is, what the charity is for and how we can raise money.

Each child has come into school wearing their own clothes and we have raised lots of money as a school which will be donated to Children in Need.

Here are most of our reception and KS1 children after dancing to 2 songs during WUSU.

Odd socks day!

Today is Odd Socks Day. We do this as part of anti-bullying week. As a school, we define bullying as hurting somebody physically or emotionally (including online) several times on purpose. This spells STOP.

We drew our own odd socks and discussed why we wear odd socks. The odd socks represent everybody being different. We should never treat others in an unkind way, because they are different to us.

We also made some posters that could be used in school to stop bullying.

Back to Funky Fingers with a bang!

We’ve had a brilliant evening at Funky Fingers club. We started off the session with 2 draw along videos of fireworks… after all, it is Bonfire Night!

How To Draw A Firework

How To Draw An Exploding Firework

(Please note that these videos do not belong to School. Please watch your child when on YouTube).

The children then used their imaginations to make various collages, drawings and models inspired by the fireworks.

Year 2 Football

Well done to the fantastic Scholes A and B football teams for taking part in their first tournament at Fives, Seacroft yesterday! Both teams represented Scholes Primary School brilliantly and played excellent games.

Here are some photographs of the teams. in action.

Thank you to the parents that allowed their children to take part and for coming along to support both teams.

Look how smart we looked, too! We’d like to thank FOSP for their incredibly generous contributions to our new kits. They’ve invested significantly to ensure that children across school can represent our school looking the part. Thanks again to everyone at FOSP.

Our next game will be Monday 25th November 2024.

Living and Learning

This week our school-wide living and learning statement has been ‘I respect myself’. We talk about the word respect often in school. One of our school rules is ‘We’re respectful.’

In 2C we had a discussion about what it means to be respectful. Last week we spoke about respecting others and their protected characteristics such as religion, race and culture. Our discussion this week involved ways we can respect our bodies and keep them healthy such as eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly.

2C spoke about the fact that everybody is different but that is okay. For our  Living and Learning task we did an activity where we each drew the head of a creature/ animal or human. We then folded the paper over and passed it to a friend who then drew a body and arms. After this we passed the paper on again and the final person drew legs. Finally, we got our original drawings back and unveiled the creature that had been created. We then spoke about how all of the pictures were different and we all have different ideas/ styles of drawing and that this should be respected.

2C update

Thhe We’ve had another great week in the 2C classroom. We started off with a very rainy week which included lots of indoor play times, so we are very happy to see the sun shining this Friday!

Reading and writing

We have been enjoying a new book this week called ‘Vlad and the Great Fire of London’. This book is about a flea and his rat friend Boxton. In the book the pair tell a story of their own experience of the Great Fire of London. We’ve been interpreting what parts of the book mean. We have also been analysing the illustrations and discussing some of the vocabulary  in the book. We’ve also been writing our own sentences about the Fire.

Maths

In Maths this week we have continued to look at place value. At the start of the week we looked at related facts e.g. if 4 + 4 = 8, then 40 + 40 = 80.

We have also started partitioning two digit numbers flexibly. For example if we know that 81 = 80 + 1, we also know that 81 = 70 + 11 and 81 = 60 + 21.

Science

We learnt about reptiles and amphibians this week in Science.  The children know that they have some similarities but also some big differences. We sorted the animals into categories and researched some facts using books from our fantastic reading corner.

History

Our current Topic in History is the Great Fire of London. We have been learning about what exactly caused the fire this week and why it spread so fast.

Drop down morning

Today, we spent some of the morning recapping Topic learning from last year. This included discussing the oceans. continents and the countries that make up the UK. We also looked at shops from the past and compared them to shops in the present.  Finally we each had a turn playing with the Beebots.

Quick message – Thank you to all of those that attended ‘Watch us while we work’ this week. It was great to see so many adults supporting their children and hopefully you’ve gone away with ideas on how you can help with learning at home.

Thanks, Miss Young 🙂

Week 3 in 2C

The children are settling into Year 2 fantastically. It has been brilliant to see how quickly the children have adapted and settled into their new routines.

Here’s an overview of what we have been up to this week!

Reading

In Reading lessons we have been looking at the book ‘Little Red’ by Bethan Woolvin. This is a story inspired by Little Red Riding Hood but it has a twist at the end. We have been reading different versions of Little Red Riding Hood and have been comparing, discussing similarities and differences.

Our Poem of the week this week has been ‘Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf’ by Roald Dahl. On the first day, we listened to the poet read the poem via audio.  The next day we focussed on rhyming words and discussed what a rhyming word is. The following day, we started to look at the meaning of some tricky vocabulary in the poem and on Thursday we showed off our fluency and prosody. This poem will be sent home alongside homework Friday 20th.

Maths

We are continuing to learn about place value in Maths this half term. This week we have been learning about what each number represents within a two-digit number. For example in the number 24, the 2 represents two tens and the 4 represents 4 ones.  See some of our learning below.

Science

In Science this week, the children have been learning about birds. This half term we will be learning all about different types of animals. Last week we learnt about mammals.

We know that all birds have a beak, wings, feathers and lay eggs. But all birds are not the same. Some birds cannot fly and only some birds can swim. During the lesson we went onto our school playground to see if we could spot any common birds. We saw several pigeons and 3 Kites!

History

During Topic lessons this week, the children have been learning all about houses in the past and why the fire spread so quickly back in 1666. We learnt that the fire spread quickly because the houses were made of wood and they were very close together. We also discussed that the ‘Great’ fire refers to the fire being big, spreading quickly and lasting 4 days. It was a significant historical event that happened a long time ago.

Here’s some other photographs showing what we have been up to this week!

First week of 2C

We have had a fantastic first week back at school. The new Year 2 children are settling very well into their new classroom. All of the children have been extremely resilient and ready to learn. Here are a few things we have been getting up to this week.

In Maths we have been recapping numbers up to 20. We have been counting forwards and backwards 1-20. We also ordered numbers in table groups by looking at the value of each number.

In phonics lessons we have been recapping letters of the alphabet and letter formation. We have also been recapping some of our sounds and ‘tricky words’ ready to begin our Little Wandle phonics lessons from next week.

The children have spent some time this week, practising saying and writing the days of the week. In Year 2, we write the ‘long date’ in our books each day. This activity is helping children to remember their spelling as well as remembering that days of the week and months of the year need a capital letter.

In PE we have been playing games that will help us to work as a team. This half term we will be working on developing skills such as spacial awareness, throwing and kicking.

It has been a pleasure to get to know the children this week. It’s going to be a brilliant year!
