Year 5 Maths

This half term in maths, we will be mainly focusing on place value. We will be comparing, ordering, and calculating with numbers up to 1 million. This week, the Year 5 children were very confident at reading and writing numbers to 1,000,000. They enjoyed an active maths lesson, where they moved around the classroom to find numbers represented with place value counters. At first, the children found it challenging writing the numbers in words but soon mastered it.

Debate- Should footballers be role models?

Today in 3/4N, during our reading session, we debated: Should footballers be considered role models?  After reading information provided by FirstNews , the children were ready with arguments for and against. During the debate, all the children respectfully listened to the opposite side, used information to inform their viewpoints and put forward logical viewpoints.

It’s coming home!!

We kicked off our World Cup mini topic this morning by looking at the Three Lions song. The children used their reading skills to answer a retrieval, an interpret and an authors choice question about the song. This then sparked a discussion about why we say ‘It’s coming home.’ What does it mean? Discuss with your child what they found out during today’s discussion.

Keepy Uppy production

Today, we enjoyed a performance of Keep Uppy, presented by Tutti Frutti productions. The play told the story of a boy, Joey, who worshipped football. He dreamed about it, talked about it and played it whenever he could. The show ignited children imaginations with the use of music, dance and visual effects. It made children think about their own passions and ambitions.

Conrad Burdekin – Library Grand Opening

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming local author Conrad Burdekin into school to ‘officially’ open our library.

Throughout the day, Conrad worked with every child in school. He read a selection of his poetry and challenged the children to a tongue twister competition. He started the day with an assembly where he taught the whole school to recite a short poem about bananas.

At the end of his day in school, Conrad cut the ribbon and officially opened the new, revamped library. School council members had the pleasure of watching him open the library and then enjoy reading their favourite books.

The children loved listening to Conrad’s poems with many children purchasing signed copies of his books. There are copies of Conrad’s books in our school library for your child to borrow if they enjoyed listening to his poetry.

Conrad was a great sport at lunchtime by helping the Year 6 children raise money as part of their enterprise week. The children enjoyed throwing their sponges at him.

To see examples of his poetry and to order his books you can visit his website –http://www.conradburdekin.com/conrads-poems/

Who is in your family from babies to grandparents. Who is the oldest in your family? Who is the youngest?

Discuss different stages of the human life cycle. Consider how people at different stages differ in terms of their personalities and responsibilities.

You could talk about your child’s aspirations for when they become adults.

Spelling activity

This week, Year 3 and 4 have been working hard at understanding apostrophes for singular and plural possession. This week’s spelling activity is to look at the text and correct the mistakes.  There are a number of apostrophes that have been used incorrectly. To help, read the text and underline any person or thing that owns something first. Then, decide whether it is singular or plural possession and where the apostrophe should go.

  • apostrophes for singular possession (when one thing owns something, such as Mrs Lake‘s jumper or  Ben’s coat)
  • apostrophes for plural possession (when more than one thing owns something, such as children‘s classroom or dogs‘ tails)
