Geography – field work in 2C

Posted on Thursday 12 October 2023 by Miss Young

On Tuesday this week, 2C did some fieldwork during our Geography lesson. We know that fieldwork means to work outside of the classroom and we go out and find the answer to some questions. Our questions were:

  • Is there a ‘conker’ tree on the field?
  • Are there any mushrooms growing?
  • How many acorns can we find?

We also looked around the field and identified different trees based on their leaves. We found lots and lots of different types of trees including: birch, ash, oak and lime trees. We also counted the trees that are on our school field. We counted 34 trees in total!

Living and Learning – respect

Posted on Wednesday 11 October 2023 by Miss Young

Over the past few weeks we have been discussing respect in school and what it looks like. Last week we discussed how we can respect others at home, school and at clubs. We watched a video about a girl that respects her family in several ways such as:

  • sharing and taking turns with her sister
  • giving her Mum space when she needs it
  • saying kind words about others

This week, the focus has been on how we respect ourselves. We compared ourselves to others by walking around the room and chatting to each other about what was the same and what was different about one another. We respect each others differences and know that we are all different.

We also know that in order to respect ourselves we should:

  • keep our bodies clean
  • eat healthily and exercise
  • work hard, but equally not be too hard on ourselves
  • give ourselves a break where we need it

Geography – Never Eat Shredded Wheat!

Posted on Thursday 05 October 2023 by Miss Young

This week KS1 have been learning about 4 points on a compass; North, East, South and West.

We came up with a few rhymes to remember each of the points on the compass.

We like ‘Never Eat Silly Worms’ the best!

We had some brilliant discussions about compasses, how they work and how they help us with directions. We even labelled our classrooms with each compass point. During the lesson, each class went out onto the KS2 playground to ‘hunt’ for the compass. Once we found it we discussed where each arrow pointed to. We played some games so that the children had the chance to practise which direction each letter on the compass points to.

See some of our photographs below!

Science – sound

Posted on Wednesday 04 October 2023 by Miss Young

This week in 2C Science we have been learning about the ears and their purpose. We know that our ears help us to hear different sounds.

We played lots of different instruments at different volumes. We learnt that it was easier to hear the sounds that were played the loudest (by hitting them, or blowing into them, on banging on them). We also learnt that it was more difficult to hear the quieter sounds.

Living and Learning

This week’s Living and Learning statement is ‘I know that rights come with responsibilities’.

Within KS1 this week we have been discussing our rights. We talked about our rights and responsibilities within our local community, our city and within school. Here are some of the ideas the children came up with:

‘I have the right to an education. I have the responsibility to try my best.’

‘I have the right to live in a clean village. I have the responsibility to make sure I pick up litter and use the bins.

We also had a look at several flashcards and took part in some role play.

Crazy about conkers in 1,2B

Posted on Thursday 28 September 2023 by Mrs Latham

We’re collecting conkers to use in our maths lessons. It’s helping us count in tens and add bigger numbers. We have 357 so far!

Geography – I can see the seas!

Posted on Wednesday 27 September 2023 by Miss Young

This week in Geography, 2C have been researching the seas that surround the UK and how to read a map key.

We listened to a song about the UK – United Kingdom Song with signing | By Al Start | Primary School Geography – YouTube (This is a YouTube link. Top tip for watching YouTube with your child: go to the settings cog along the play bar and turn off autoplay – this avoids an inappropriate clip coming up automatically, and helps to discourage your child from passively watching clip after clip.)

We also used Google Earth and Atlases to help us with our research.

Maths: place value

Posted on Tuesday 26 September 2023 by Miss Young

This half term, Y2 are focussing on Place Value in Maths. Numbers are very important so it is important we know everything we can about numbers 0-100. We have been using place value charts, part-part-whole models and ten frames to recognise which number represents the ‘tens’ and which represents the ‘ones’.

PE in 1,2B

Posted on Monday 25 September 2023 by Mrs Latham

We certainly have had happy and healthy PE lessons the last two weeks. We played a tag game, after making our own ‘pitch’ using cones. The highlight for most people was the ‘up and down’ team game at the end. We could all see and feel how our bodies had changed after exercise!

Science in Year 1

Posted on Saturday 23 September 2023 by Mrs Wilkins

In Science we are learning about the human body! We have enjoyed drawing around our bodies on the playground and labeling our body parts.

Over the next few weeks we will be focusing on the five senses. The children were very inquisitive when finding out about their sense of sight and what it might be like to be blind. Guides dogs and braille came into our conversations. We conducted a little investigation on the playground: Could we accurately throw a beanbag into a hoop if we were partially sighted or blind? Ask your child to retell their findings.
