History, heroes and strong beliefs in 1,2B
We have been learning all about real life heroes in our history topic this half term. We practised voicing beliefs, like Nelson Mandela and Leonora Cohen did. Have at look at some ‘speeches’ below.

We also dressed up as real life heroes today – thanks for all the great costumes. There were sporting, emergency services, suffragettes and teacher heroes!
Y1 maths – place value and counting to 100
Over the next few weeks, year 1 children we will be focusing on place value and counting bigger numbers. Knowing your way around a 100 square is an important part of this area of maths. The Top Marks website has some great games and this interactive 100 square is perfect for counting in 1s (forwards and backwards), 2s, 5s, 10, odd and one more/less.
We are partitioning numbers into tens and ones.
Help at home by talking about numbers up to 100 in terms of how many 10s and 1s they have.
Living and Learning-I know the importance of a healthy diet.
After looking at a balanced meal and the ‘eat-well-plate’ last week, we have thought about the importance of eating ‘5-a-day’ this week. 5 is the amount of fruit and/or vegetables that is recommended for us to eat daily (as a minimum). We have been reflecting on how easy or hard it might be to get to the 5! Our learning has also helped us to realise what makes a portion.
A portion means a handful-Frankie
You can drink a glass of apple juice. That’s one portion!-Fletcher
Just one or two raspberries doesn’t make a portion-Myla
PE-Throwing and catching skills in KS1
All classes in Key Stage 1 have been working on throwing and catching skills this half term. These skills will lead to great control and contribute significantly in netball and basketball games later on in life.
Each class begins with set games and skills to learn. As always, it seems that each class develops a game and creates a new one. Children are so creative and we encourage their positive participation.
There has been much joy and determination to succeed when playing ‘Head, shoulders, knees and toes.’ In this game we throw the ball in the air and try to touch our head then catch the ball. We then go onto the next, building up the body parts each time. As you can imagine, we have had some rogue balls!
‘Chase Tag’ has involved us throwing and catching with a partner until an adult shouts ‘chase.’ We then run to tig our partner, gently, with the ball. With our partners we have aimed our balls to ‘clash’ in the middle. This then lead to a ‘piggy in the middle’ style game, and a mini team game. All throwing, catching, bouncing, dodging and thinking strategically.
We have all loved it!

Heroes day – Thursday 22 May
We are celebrating our ‘Heroes’ history topic by having a dress up day next week (if your child doesn’t want to dress up, they can come in school uniform).
We are going to dress as a real life hero (no superhero costumes, please). Here is the Heroes day letter and some ideas below.
I know the importance of 5 a day
This week KS1 have really being getting into our school motto, ‘Scholes is happy and healthy’. But what does it mean to be healthy?
We can keep our bodies healthy in lots of different ways. It is important to keep active and fit.
We do this each week by taking part in WUSU, PE and swimming. Lots of the children also take part in after school clubs.
Our diets are equally important to keep our bodies healthy. We know we need to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables each day.
Our fantastic school library service has also brought us some fantastic books about keeping active and healthy. We are really enjoying making our way through them!
Help at home by discussing what it means to eat a healthy diet and encourage children to help prepare food where appropriate.
Walk to school week
Next week, we are taking part in ‘Walk to school week!’
The children are being encouraged to be more active next week and avoiding travelling to school in a car. We would love the children to walk, cycle or scoot to school. We would really appreciate parents support on this. If you live further afield, maybe you could park near to school and walk the last part of your journey.
The children will be signing a pledge in their classes this week and will receive an activity book they will complete in school. Each day the classes will tally up the active journeys. If you have any photographs of your children completing their active journey to school, please send them to sarahhogarth@spherefederation.org.
Let’s make next week active, happy and healthy!

I know the importance of a healthy diet
In Living and learning this week, KS1 have been looking at what a healthy diet is.
We know that we need to eat food from different food groups to create a ‘balanced diet’.
We also know what we need to do to keep our bodies healthy such as exercise and get enough sleep.
As part of our ‘being healthy’ focus, the children also came up with some brilliant games to play at playtime, to help count towards the 60 minutes of exercise they need each day.
Help at home by talking to your child about the importance of a balanced diet and encourage them to tell or show you what that might look like at tea time!
Science – investigating how bulbs grow in different temperatures
We are growing bulbs in science. In this investigation we will observe the bulbs growing in different temperatures – the warm windowsill in the classroom and the cold fridge. They will both be watered.
We will be observing over time (4 weeks), measuring and watching closely what happens. We made predictions when we set up our investigation.
Help at home by growing bulbs or seeds of your own, observing what happens as they grow. We’d love to see any photos of your plants. Email them to you teacher.

KS1 Reading – Amazing Grace
This half term we are sharing Mary Hoffman’s story ‘Amazing Grace’ in our classes. It’s a lovely story about a young girl named Grace who loves stories and using her imagination. She likes to dress up and act out her favourite tales. One day at school, Grace wants to play Peter Pan in the class play. But some kids tell her she can’t – because she’s a girl and because she’s Black. Grace feels sad, but with the love and encouragement of her Nana and Ma, she decides to try anyway. And guess what? She gives an amazing audition!
Help at home: Share the story with your child at home by clicking the link. This story teaches children that they can be anything they want to be, no matter what others say. What does your child want to be? You could discuss their hopes and dreams with them and relate it back to Grace from the story. Which character would they like to play from a book, programme, film or pantomime?
