Cultural Homework

The standard of the creative homework in Year 3/4 last week was fantastic! The presentation of artwork and handwriting is improving weekly. We saw many different examples of cultural experiences from the children ranging from films, art and sculptures, to holidays, hobbies and books.

Here are just a few examples to show the range and quality of work from our students.

19 January 2018

Spelling homework this week is a look, say, cover, write, check activity for words that end in e. This week, the children have been using the spelling rule – ‘drop the ‘e’ for ing‘. For example:

  • hope – hoping
  • dance – dancing
Root word ending in ‘e’ Drop the ‘e’ for ‘ing’ Write the ‘ing’ word from memory using look, cover, write, check strategy.
hope hoping
ache
dancing

Support with spelling

Have you checked out out Learn More pages? They contain lots of tips and ideas to support your child at home.

In particular, look at the Help Your Child page. On here, we’ve just published a new guide to support your child with their spellings – it’s full of ideas to learn spellings in an active way. Encourage your child to try out the ideas. They won’t all suit, but some may end up being their favourite – and most effective – strategy!

Attendance matters

Our attendance figures for Autumn are really encouraging – thank you to all the parents and carers who have helped to ensure children are in school as much as possible.

The whole school attendance figure is 97.1%. It’s a little lower than for the same period last year (97.4%), and we’ll keep an eye on this, but overall, it’s good to see the figure remain above 97.0%.

  • F2M (Miss Eckersley’s class): 97.3%
  • F2L (Mrs Flynn’s class): 97.2%
  • 1K (Miss Parling’s class): 97.5%
  • 1/2V (Mrs Latham’s class): 97.1%
  • 2KL (Miss Lowry’s and Mrs Wilkins’ class): 97.0%
  • 3/4C (Mr Gathercole’s class): 96.1%
  • 3/4E (Mrs McCormick’s class): 96.5%
  • 3/4PN (Mrs Allaway’s and Miss Lake’s class): 97.3%
  • 5/6C (Miss Barrott’s class): 97.7%
  • 5/6F (Miss Bainbridge’s class): 97.4%
  • 5/6M (Mr Lindsay’s class): 96.2%

Well done especially to Class 1K and Class 5/6C, both of which have attendance quite a lot higher than the school average!

SATs in May

The Key Stage 2 tests (commonly called SATs) are in May:

  • Monday 14 May: English grammar, punctuation and spelling papers 1 and 2
  • Tuesday 15 May: English reading
  • Wednesday 16 May: Mathematics papers 1 and 2
  • Thursday 17 May: Mathematics paper 3

New style National Curriculum tests were introduced in 2016. This video lasts around five minutes and gives you a useful overview of the tests.

As always, speak with us if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

It’s Christmas!

We hope you all enjoy a well-deserved break and come back to school ready and fresh to learn on 02 January.

As it’s the holidays, there’s no homework this week but there’s a few things we think you should try and do over the festive break:

  • spend time with family
  • spend time with friends
  • play outside
  • throw a snowball
  • build a snowman
  • read a book, or two (or three)
  • do something nice for your parents or carers
  • spend some time relaxing and being mindful – remember our workshop?
  • investigate something you observe
  • be polite to everyone you meet
  • eat a few treats (and plenty of veggies!)
  • and, last but not least, have a generally awesome two weeks
